Lin Chang, MD, on What's New in Rome V
I'm Lin Chang. I'm a professor of medicine and gastroenterologist at UCLA Los Angeles, California. And I have the privilege of giving this year's ACG Edward J. Burke lecture. And this lecture is about what's new in Rome V. This is a set of criteria and information about disorders of gut-brain interaction that was launched in May of 2026. This occurs every 10 years, and I'm going to summarize what's new, but I particularly wanted to focus on what's applicable in clinical practice.
Harsh Parenting and Adolescents’ Phubbing Behavior: Depression and Grit Matter
Abstract Phubbing is a prevalent behavior among adolescents, characterized by ignoring others while using mobile devices. To enhance prevention and intervention strategies for related issues, this study investigated 720 middle school students (Mage =15.57, SDage = 1.10) to examine the associations between harsh parenting and adolescent phubbing behavior, focusing on the mediating role of depression and the moderating role of grit.
Irritable bowel syndrome - Nature Reviews Disease Primers
Abstract Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most prevalent disorders of gut–brain interaction, characterized by recurrent abdominal pain or abdominal discomfort associated with altered bowel habits in the absence of identifiable structural disease. IBS affects ~4–11% of the global population and is associated with substantial healthcare utilization, impaired quality of life and considerable socioeconomic burden.
Precision medicine in rheumatoid arthritis: advances and clinical applications of multi-omics biomarkers
Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a highly heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterized by the presence of synovitis, joint destruction, and systemic inflammation. Despite the substantial improvement in patient outcomes brought about by the advent of targeted therapies, the traditional “one-size-fits-all” treatment model still faces numerous challenges.
Biointerfacial impedance limited ionic gating in a printed microbial electrochemical transistor for BOM evaluation
Abstract Monitoring biodegradable organic matter (BOM) is crucial for environmental evaluation, yet microbial electrochemical sensors frequently encounter signal drift and limited stability. Here, we report a printed coplanar microbial electrochemical transistor (pMECT) that operates in a biointerfacial impedance-limited ionic gating regime. A gate bias was applied as an electrochemical selective pressure to enrich electroactive bacteria and establish a stable microbial consortium on the gate.
Hyper-spectral photonic integrated circuits based on recursive inverse design
Abstract Manipulating optical spectra with complex spectral responses is central to high-performance photonic computing and sensing, but conventional integrated circuits typically increase features by cascading devices, which scales complexity linearly with cascade depth and is difficult to expand. Here, we introduce hyper-spectral photonic integrated circuits comprising a chain of interconnected reflective nodes.
Stool Softener vs. Laxative: Understanding the Differences, Benefits, and Best Uses
Constipation affects millions of Americans each year, causing symptoms such as infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, bloating, and discomfort. The drugstore offers a wide range of over-the-counter treatments, but you may wonder which is right for you when comparing a stool softener vs. laxative. “The biggest misunderstanding is that all constipation medicines work the same way,” says Lin Chang, MD, vice chief of the Division of Digestive Diseases at UCLA Health. “They do not.
Chaotic photonics in microresonators
Abstract Microcavities, which confine photons to a small volume for extended durations, provide an ideal platform to study, enhance and leverage light–matter interactions. The resulting opportunities encompass a broad range of phenomena, including lasing, sensing, frequency comb and soliton generation, cavity optomechanics and non-Hermitian physics.

Multiband wireless systems based on microwave integrated photonics with metasurfaces
Abstract Modern wireless technologies—spanning mobile communications to satellite links—rely on systems operating across disparate microwave bands. Although escalating data demands have driven the evolution from 2G to 6G, each generation has traditionally required dedicated, frequency-specific hardware, complicating multiband integration.
Full dimensional control of structured microwaves based on microcombs - Nature Photonics
Abstract Structured electromagnetic waves offer vast potential for both fundamental research and practical applications due to their rich degrees of freedom. However, exploiting these dimensions in the microwave regime has traditionally required substantial hardware and system complexity, where each dimension’s generation, construction and manipulation often necessitate disparate and specialized equipment.
Large-scale quantum communication networks with integrated photonics - Nature

Pockels laser directly driving ultrafast optical metrology - Light: Science & Applications
Abstract The invention of the laser unleashed the potential of optical metrology, leading to numerous advancements in modern science and technology. This reliance on lasers, however, also introduces a bottleneck for precision optical metrology, as it requires sophisticated photonic infrastructure for precise laser-wave control, leading to limited metrology performance and significant system complexity.
Microresonator-referenced soliton microcombs with zeptosecond-level timing noise - Nature Photonics
Abstract Optical frequency division relies on optical frequency combs to translate ultrastable optical frequency references coherently to the microwave domain. This technology has enabled the synthesis of microwave signals with ultralow timing noise; however, the necessary instrumentation remains too bulky for practical applications. Recently, efforts have focused on leveraging microphotonic technologies to enhance system compactness.

Vascular smooth muscle cell PRDM16 regulates circadian variation in blood pressure
Abstract Disruptions of blood pressure (BP) circadian variation are closely associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Thus, gaining insights into the molecular mechanisms of BP circadian variation is essential for comprehending BP regulation. Human genetic analyses suggest that PR domain–containing protein 16 (PRDM16), a transcription factor highly expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), is significantly associated with BP-related traits.

ER stress-induced TREM2 downregulation exacerbates platelet activation and myocardial infarction in patients with coronary artery disease
Abstract Coronary artery disease (CAD) is characterized by the chronic immune-inflammation, excessive endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and platelet hyperactivity; however, whether there is a signaling hub linking these events remains unclear. Here, we identified that triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2), an important pattern recognition receptor of the innate immune system, may serve as one such hub.

Robust Adaptive Beamforming for Interference Suppression Based on SNR
1. Introduction In some application scenarios, such as target detection [1,2], target recognition [3,4], and communications [5,6], ambient noise and interference will degrade the quality of desired signals [7]. Beamforming [8,9,10] can be employed to reduce the effects of noise and interference and improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In recent decades, adaptive beamforming has been used in many fields to improve signal quality [11,12].

Single-cell RNA sequencing provides novel insights to pathologic pathways in abdominal aortic aneurysm
Introduction Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a complex multifactorial pathologic dilation of the abdominal aorta. AAAs are prevalent in roughly 1–2% of men over the age of 65 years, and nearly 0.5% of women over 70 years old, however, AAA rupture is the leading cause of death in the United States (1, 2). Aneurysms progressively dilate over time, and once reaching a threshold size, elective surgical repair with either open surgery or endovascular graft placement is recommended.

Recent Advancements and Biotechnological Implications of Carotenoid Metabolism of Brassica
Abstract : Carotenoids were synthesized in the plant cells involved in photosynthesis and photo-protection. In humans, carotenoids are essential as dietary antioxidants and vitamin A precursors. Brassica crops are the major sources of nutritionally important dietary carotenoids. Recent studies have unraveled the major genetic components in the carotenoid metabolic pathway in Brassica, including the identification of key factors that directly participate or regulate carotenoid biosynthesis.
