Standardized pre-consultation by a large language model agent vs ophthalmology residents: a randomized clinical trial
Abstract History-taking is central yet constrained by limited clinical resources. We designed a pre-consultation large language model (LLM) agent for history-taking using a dual-agent architecture with skills-engineered symptom-oriented logic trees, and conducted a randomized clinical trial at a tertiary ophthalmic hospital in Guangzhou, China.
Nuclear cathepsin L induces DNA damage by regulating DNA repair factors in ovarian cancer
Abstract Resistance to PARP inhibitors (PARPi) remains a major clinical challenge in ovarian cancer (OC), emphasizing the need for novel strategies to enhance therapeutic efficiency. Our previous work revealed that the antimalarial drug quinacrine (QC) can be repurposed to induce cell death in OC by promoting lysosomal release of active cathepsin L (CTSL).
Unraveling the coastal marine plastisphere archaeome
Abstract Plastic pollution has created an expanding anthropogenic microbial niche, the plastisphere, raising questions about microbial ecology and associated impacts. Archaea, the third domain of life with fundamental ecological and evolutionary significance, remain poorly understood in this habitat.

Crowded Public Spaces as Hotspots of Airborne Microbial Risk: A Population-Weighted Risk Assessment in Urban Environments Click to copy article link Article link copied!
Abstract Click to copy section linkSection link copied! Airborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pose growing health risks in cities, where enclosed spaces, inadequate ventilation, and high population density enhance their persistence and dissemination. However, the microbial burden and risk associated with high-occupancy public spaces remain poorly quantified.

Multicenter fine annotated surgical video dataset for minimally invasive glaucoma surgery
Abstract Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) presents substantial challenges due to its intricate procedures and high technical demands, necessitating robust surgical navigation systems. The development of these systems is highly dependent on the availability of precisely annotated datasets. Addressing this need, we have created the first multicenter, large-scale, fine-annotated surgical video dataset for MIGS.
Towards generalizable seizure monitoring: EpiVLM for cross-environment detection and classification
Abstract The translation of automated seizure detection from controlled clinical units to real-world settings is hindered by heterogeneous recording conditions and limited expert monitoring. We introduce EpiVLM, a multimodal vision–language system that combines clinically structured prompts with video reasoning for cross-environment seizure monitoring.
Akkermansia muciniphila attenuates intervertebral disc degeneration via extracellular vesicle-mediated delivery of the effector protein B2UKX5
Abstract Low back pain is a leading cause of global disability, with intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) as a primary contributor. Emerging evidence suggests a link between gut microbiota and disc health, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Through Mendelian randomization and a clinical cohort analysis, we identified a causal inverse relationship between Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk) abundance and IVDD risk, with reduced fecal Akk levels correlating with increased IVDD severity.
Assessment of treatment effectiveness, follow-up results, and recurrence patterns in children with Helicobacter pylori infection
Abstract Background: Helicobacter pylori infection remains a prevalent chronic bacterial condition in children and is associated with significant long-term gastrointestinal complications, including peptic ulcer disease and an increased risk of gastric malignancy. Although standard triple therapy is widely used as first-line treatment, rising antimicrobial resistance and reinfection continue to challenge eradication success in children.

Ocular biometry agreement among ZW-30, IOLMaster 700, and sirius in cataract patients - Scientific Reports
Abstract Accurate ocular biometry is crucial for the success of refractive cataract surgery. This study aims to assess the consistency and differences of a new biometer, the ZW-30, compared with the mainstream devices IOLMaster 700 and Sirius in patients with cataracts. A total of 307 patients with cataracts (603 eyes) were included.

Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent joint disease with a complex etiology, involving epigenetic alterations. Recent studies have suggested the potential of Oct4, Sox2 and Klf4 (OSK) in rejuvenating adult cells and facilitating tissue repair, but their specific role in OA pathophysiology and treatment remains unclear. Here we employed an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector to achieve ectopic expression of OSK (AAV-OSK).

Changes of retinal microvascular parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with or without diabetic kidney disease
Abstract Purpose: To investigate the quantitative retinal microvascular parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with or without diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Methods: This retrospective study included 117 T2DM patients with DKD (DKD group) and 179 T2DM patients without DKD (non-DKD group).
Investigating the impact of residual refraction within ±1.0 dioptre on uncorrected distance visual acuity in pseudophakic eyes: a cross-sectional study
Discussion In this study, we investigated the impact of postoperative SE on UDVA in patients with or without astigmatism following monofocal IOL implantation. Our findings demonstrated that minimised residual refractions (closer to 0 D) provided optimal UDVA, especially slight hyperopia outperforming slight myopia following cataract surgery without astigmatic correction. Notably, any astigmatism ≥0.50 D should be actively corrected.

Control of toxicity of fine particulate matter emissions in China - Nature
Abstract Fine particulate matter (particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less; PM2.5) causes millions of premature deaths globally1, but not all particles are equally harmful2,3,4. Current air-pollution control strategies, prioritizing PM2.5 mass reduction, have provided considerable health benefits but further refinements based on differences in the toxicity of various emission sources may provide greater benefits5,6,7.

What harmful microbes are lurking in the world’s 7 billion tonnes of plastic waste?
In June, more than 2,000 volunteers participated in the 2024 Global Ocean Cleanup campaign and netted nearly 40 tonnes of plastic debris from just some 80 kilometres of ocean and coasts across the world, including sites from Vietnam to California. Although representing one week’s hard work for the volunteers, such initiatives are a drop in the ocean of plastic waste that is generated each year — about 400 million tonnes, equivalent to the weight of all adult humans currently on Earth.

Liquid Phase Exfoliation of Few‐Layer Non‐Van der Waals Chromium Sulfide
1 Introduction Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, 2D layered van der Waals (vdW) nanomaterials have been widely utilized in various technological fields owing to their potentially valuable physicochemical properties.[1] It is well known that most of the 2D nanomaterials consist of stacked layers and can be prepared through the “bottom-up” or “top-down” methods.[2] Liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) is the most adopted “top-down” method to prepare 2D nanoplates with high quality from layered...

Predicting the risk of glaucoma-related adverse events following secondary intraocular lens implantation in paediatric eyes: a 3-year study
Abstract Aims To establish and evaluate predictive models for glaucoma-related adverse events (GRAEs) following secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in paediatric eyes. Methods 205 children (356 aphakic eyes) receiving secondary IOL implantation at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center with a 3-year follow-up were enrolled. Cox proportional hazard model was used to identify predictors of GRAEs and developed nomograms.
