Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Outside of my college paper, working on the digital team for News 3 Now in Madison, Wisconsin.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No (though the novelty, or the nostalgia, excites me).

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email!

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

It’d be easier to list the ones I don’t use.

What's your favorite social network?

I’ve practically lived on Twitter for the better part of a decade.

Who do you wish followed you?

No one in particular — just people who appreciate local news, music opinions and jokes.

Why did you become a journalist?

I’ve always gravitated toward storytelling and journalism gave me the option to pursue that while staying informed.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

I’d say I’m still an aspiring journalist so.. question everything and everyone.

What's your favorite drink?

A brandy old-fashioned sweet is an all-time classic.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I’m probably either biking, sitting in my cozy room reading/listening to records or visiting my favorite local restaurants and bars!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I’m big into music journalism, so The Fader is a personal favorite of mine.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

People often think that not much happens in Madison other than politics and university-related news. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.
