Nevada County Probation Officer III Ben Hertel was honored Thursday in Roseville after saving a fellow hockey player who suffered cardiac arrest on the ice. What started as a pickup hockey game quickly turned into a life-or-death emergency when Ken Dorner suffered a medical emergency and collapsed on the ice without a pulse. Hertel sprang into action to help the man he had played with only a handful of times.

“Ambassadors of the Fair” – Volunteers Bring Welcoming Smiles and Helping Hearts

As fairgoers enter Gate 1 of Nevada County Fairgrounds, many stop at the little corrugated metal building with the sign, “Guest Services” looking for directions. Smiling volunteers wearing blue-shirts are ready to provide customer service and answer questions to the 20,000-plus people that come through the fair gates daily. They field questions about bus schedules, events, exhibits and point people to bathrooms and ATM machines. This year, 40 volunteers are signed up to donate their time.

GRASS VALLEY, Calif., August 14, 2026 – This week, young people who have worked hard for months raising animals and building projects for show and sale are seeing their efforts come to fruition at the Nevada County Fair. “It’s not just weekends and holidays. It’s year-round on some of these projects – like dairy goats  and show pigs. They’re working as hard as they can to get ready for each show and each fair,” said Scott Gomes, a leader for Nevada County 4-H and the Club of Clear Creek 4-H.
