Photosynthetic diversity in the genus Blepharis (Acanthaceae) and the evolutionary origins of C4 photosynthesis

Retracing the origins of novel adaptations is a major challenge in evolutionary biology. This problem is best addressed by detailed comparative studies using lineages bearing ancestral and derived phenotypes. In plants, one of the most well-studied examples is C4 photosynthesis. The trait has repeatedly emerged in several families of eudicots and monocots through anatomical, ultrastructural, and biochemical modifications to the ancestral C3 physiology that concentrate CO2 around Rubisco.

Dietary restriction is evolutionary conserved on the phenotypic and mechanistic level

Abstract The anti-ageing response of Dietary Restriction (DR) is thought to be an ancient mechanistic response, reasoning from its phenotypic conservation in a wide range of organisms. However, DR is implemented using different diets and methods across species, and evidence for conservation at the mechanistic level remains limited. Here we tested the longevity and fecundity response to DR across eight different species of Drosophila using the same diets in a reaction norm framework.

Chromosome-scale genome assembly and linkage map for Silene uniflora reveal the recombination landscape in a rapidly evolving plant species

Abstract The genus Silene is an important model system for fields as diverse as sex chromosome evolution, speciation and disease ecology. However, genomic resources remain scarce in the genus. Here, we present a chromosome-scale genome assembly for S. uniflora, a hermaphroditic/gynodioecious species which is an important model for rapid adaptation to anthropogenic disturbance and the role of phenotypic plasticity in adaptive evolution.
