A year to the day after ICE arrest, Milford teen graduates from high school

This year, on this day, Gomes arrived without incident at Milford High, where he was one of 280 students to stride across the turf football field to receive their diplomas on a wind swept, sunny morning. When they called Gomes’s name, he stepped forward smiling and clapping as cheers erupted in the bleachers. During the two-hour ceremony, there was only one reference to what happened a year ago. Yago Sampaio, who had been in the car when Gomes was arrested, addressed the crowd as class president.

On the brick wall of the Rescue Co. 2 firehouse in Roxbury, five plaques commemorate the lives of Boston firemen from that unit who have died in the line of duty. The newest plaque remembers the oldest tragedy, the death of Charles Buchanan in 1947. Buchanan only got a plaque in 2022 after a modern-day fireman dove deep in the archives and asked the fire commissioner to honor him.

Haytam El Ayoubi is not your average 10-year-old. In his free time, the East Boston fourth-grader watches videos about how airplanes are wired and builds his own portable fans. “Just out of motors and glue,” he said. As a student at O’Donnell Elementary, basic fractions and decimals are easy for Haytam.

I use Notion as a project management/organizational system. I track everything there: pitches, invoices, contact lists...
