Matt Kaufax is an award-winning journalist, host, and features reporter for WTOP News and creator of "Matt About Town."
An Alumni of Syracuse University's Newhouse School, he started his career in 2017 as an MMJ at WRDW/WAGT in Augusta, GA before moving to WHNS in Greenville, SC in 2019.
Starting in 2023, Matt freelanced at WTOP as a general assignment reporter, before the video content he occasionally produced for the station's digital platforms really took on a life (and audience) of their own...and "Matt About Town" was born!
The twice-weekly feature segment, highlighting the slices of life--the people, places, events, and other phenomena that make the nation's capital a unique and incredible place to live in and explore--are the essence of MAT; the reason why millions of viewers/listeners have helped propel the show to new heights.
Matt's stories are often exclusive, behind-the-scenes angles, diving deep into hidden historical or scientific lore. His series "Obscure Monuments," which tells the crazy backstories behind many of DC's hidden monuments forgotten to time, has been nominated for 2 consecutive Capital Emmy Awards.
For his work, Matt has earned four Emmy nominations, multiple recognitions from the Chesapeake AP Broadcasters Association (including "Best Reporter" in 2025), three Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, and a 2025 National Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Feature Reporting.
Above all, Matt loves telling the stories that showcase the underbelly of community; the stories that put smiles on peoples' faces, teach them something new, or both! He loves interacting with his audience, and often gets great story tips from friends of the show!
