Three Raymond Briggs books that helped make the graphic novel respectable
Raymond Briggs, who died on August 9 aged 88, transformed the way we see and value of the strip cartoon and graphic novel in this country. Briggs’ great achievement was to make the form intellectually respectable through telling stories about seemingly ordinary characters, which were rendered skilfully in the egalitarian medium of coloured pencil.

Collaborative design fuels shared understanding-the fundamental currency of Lean UX
What is a “user experience”? It’s the sum total of all of the interactions a user has with your product and service. It’s created by all of the decisions that you and your team make about your product or service: the way you price it, the way you package and sell it, the way you onboard users, the way you support it and maintain it and upgrade it, and so on and so on. In other words, it’s created by a team, not an individual user interface designer.

How to design bot conversations
I love taking an idea to a prototype, and then to a product that millions of people use. There are a lot of ways to design a conversation. One option is to just expand on the Wizard of Oz technique demonstrated in Chapter 15, and mimic the scripts by impersonating the bot. While this is a very easy and quick method to get your product in front of your users and other stakeholders, it provides low fidelity when it comes to rendering rich interactions.
How information architecture facilitates information finding

He is a partner in Futuredraft, a digital design consultancy based in Oakland, CA, and has served the global UX community as president and director of the Information Architecture Institute and as managing editor of Boxes and Arrows magazine. more
9 critical tools for designing a product
I should warn you, if you’re already a professional designer of any sort, you may find some of the following tedious or infuriating. That’s OK. This isn’t meant to teach professional designers to be even better at their jobs. This is meant to teach other people how to do enough design to validate or invalidate their initial hypotheses. It’s also meant to teach designers how to design in Lean environments and validate their work.
Be smart with responsive web design
Because we so often create a responsive site by adding things like more media queries for various screen sizes, it’s easy to forget that we may also be adding a ton of extra overhead for our users. This is especially true when a design starts with a desktop version and is then edited to scale down for smaller screens: what happens to those assets that have been optimized for the desktop view?
Inclusive searches for squarks and gluinos with the ATLAS detector
Despite the absence of experimental evidence, TeV-scale supersymmetry remains one of the best-motivated and studied Standard Model extensions. These proceedings summarise recent ATLAS results on inclusive searches for supersymmetric squarks and gluinos, including third-generation squarks produced in the decay of gluinos.

How to decide what product to build
LET’S PLAY A GAME. (I’m imagining the computer voice from the movie WarGames. Alas, I digress.)1 How many people do you think are on the following product or feature teams? Hint: the number is definitely smaller than you think.
How to design a product at a startup
For someone browsing the web, Google is a text box and a page of results, and not the bots that crawl the web, the algorithm to rank pages, or the hundreds of thousands of servers in multiple data centers around the world. For someone who needs a ride, Uber is a button on their phone they can push to order a car, and not the real-time dispatch system, the payment processing systems, or all the effort that goes into recruiting drivers and fighting with regulators.

Responsible IoT design
This chapter looks at the factors that make products trustworthy and safe to use. Connecting up products and services brings new challenges for security, privacy, social engineering, and the environment. We argue that we should consider how our designs impact on others’ lives, and take this as seriously as we take the need for profit and competitive advantage.
3 types of knowledge a product manager should seek
Anywhere you go, successful product managers are relentless in their pursuit of knowledge, although the kinds of knowledge that matter—and how to obtain that knowledge—vary. We recommend thinking about your research and expertise as an enterprise product manager as falling into three distinct categories: organizational knowledge, product knowledge, and industry knowledge.

She has been at Facebook since 2006, helping grow the service from 8 million college and high school students to over 1 billion people all over the world.
Evaluate a product/market fit
In this chapter, we will discuss how to identify when a product/market fit has been achieved and how to exit the explore stage and start exploiting our product with its identified market. We’ll show how to use customized metrics to understand whether we are achieving measurable business outcomes while continuing to solve our customers’ problems by engaging them throughout our development process.
How to enhance the navigation experience on mobile devices
I like to read reviews in mobile marketplaces to better understand how people are using apps. The marketplace rating system offers incredibly valuable feedback of a kind that doesn’t exist for web and desktop applications. It provides a rich source of information about customer preferences and expectations. In general, most 4- and 5-star reviews aren’t very specific.

How successful design leaders achieve personal growth and a balanced life
The theme of this chapter might seem more appropriate to being included in a self-help book. The reality is that the personal growth and mental health of the leader is inexplicably linked to the success of any business. Without exception, all of the design leaders we met with felt that ongoing personal growth and leading a balanced life were critical to their success as company or team leaders.

3 strategies to change user behavior
How can a product help its users pass all the way through the Action Funnel and actually take action? There are three big strategies that a company can choose from, to change behavior and help users take action. Two of them come straight from the research literature and from the difference between deliberative and intuitive actions. The third is less obvious, but immensely powerful—it’s called cheating.
Techniques for designing to reduce risk
This is an excerpt from "The impact of design: How design influences outcomes"— watch the full presentation on O'Reilly's learning platform. Engineers are responsible for the code, and designers are responsible for the user, right? Well, contrary to popular belief, designers and developers have very similar jobs: both are responsible for solving problems for their users.
Returning to our senses
If a Tree Falls in the Forest… B imaging to monitor deforestation during the 1980s. This was the first large-scale, coordinated response to loggers and ranchers who had been illegally clearing the rainforests, and it worked, for a time. To avoid being spotted, loggers and ranchers began working more discreetly in smaller areas that were harder to detect (see Figure 1-1).1 This required a new approach to monitoring the forests.
