Abstract Chemokines play critical roles in the recruitment and activation of immune cells in both homeostatic and pathologic conditions. Here, we examined chemokine ligand-receptor pairs to better understand the immunopathogenesis of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), a complex autoimmune connective tissue disorder. Our objectives were to investigate the immunopathogenesis and therapeutic targets of interface dermatitis in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus.

Our study used a tissue microarray (TMA) composed of 76 unique patient samples of cSCC (Supplementary Figure S1, Table 1, and Supplementary Table S1). Most cancers (82.8%) were early stage I and IIa (Table 1 and Supplementary Table S1). Four TMA sections were stained with four distinct panels that included DNA marker DAPI and 3 fluorescent markers in each panel: 1) PanCytokeratin-VISTA-CD11b-DAPI, 2) CD8-PDL1-CD68-DAPI, 3) CD3-Ki67-GranzymeB, and 4) PanCytokeratin-CD4-CD8-Foxp3 (Figure 1a, b, c).
