As he rounded the bases after whacking a home run last Tuesday at Springs Brooks Stadium, Blake Barthol soaked in the moment during his final regular-season home game at Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers’ coaching staff knew nothing about him when he arrived for a Labor Day baseball camp before his senior season at Parkland High School. He hasn’t stopped impressing them since he caught their attention on a back field in 2021.

Whether in sickness or health, he has played at an elite level. Thomas, a Parkland High School graduate, delivered his latest stat-stuffing performance in a Saturday visit to Delaware Valley, the reigning MAC Freedom Conference champion. He finished with 32 points, nine rebounds and six assists while playing 43 of 45 minutes in an 88-84 overtime win.

His family moved from Allentown to Emmitsburg, Maryland, after his dad, Jerry, left his job at DeSales University to become president at Mount St. Mary’s in July 2024. Liam’s mom, Erin, was diagnosed with brain cancer within days of Jerry starting his job at Mount St. Mary’s. As the Joyce family dealt with Erin’s cancer diagnosis and its move, Liam Joyce had his own health issues to handle.

The Greyhounds won their opener 96-93 against local rival Muhlenberg before establishing a single-game program record in points during Thursday’s 120-118 win at Immaculata.

Randy Okungu watched from the sideline for most of his first football season at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He’s spent his second and final season with the Crimson Hawks pushing into opposing backfields. Okungu, a Whitehall High School graduate, enjoyed his most productive day of 2025 when he registered 2.5 sacks in Saturday’s win at Clarion.

For a second straight season, the Kutztown University women’s basketball team needs to incorporate a large group of newcomers to its roster. The success the Golden Bears had meshing returning players and freshmen last season has them optimistic for 2025-26. Kutztown starts this season with heightened expectations after winning the first PSAC title in program history in 2024-25. The Golden Bears were recently picked by the league’s coaches to finish second in the PSAC East.

Lehigh Valley college basketball: DeSales-Davidson a father-son matchup
Several Parkland High School boys basketball coaches and former players were eating dinner together in August when Davidson men’s basketball coach Matt McKillop texted Nick Coval. Davidson, an NCAA Division I program where Coval is a redshirt freshman, was struggling to find an opponent for its 2025-26 home opener. McKillop had an idea but wanted to check with Coval before pursuing it.

Playing at Easton Area High School gave J’Vier Johnson one football family. He’s developed a new set of bonds with former Eastern Pennsylvania Conference foesturned college teammates. Johnson is one of 16 former EPC players on the Wilkes University football team. He’s among the Lehigh Valley products with a regular role for the Colonels (4-2 overall, 2-0 Landmark Conference), who are tied with Susquehanna for first place in the Landmark Conference.

A season-opening loss to Edinboro left Matt Frame and his East Stroudsburg University football teammates with little margin for error in their quest to return to the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Warriors enter the second half of their schedule alive for postseason play thanks to the urgency they’ve practiced and played with since their early setback. ESU carries a five-game winning streak into this week after outlasting Bloomsburg 38-35 on Saturday.
Lehigh Valley college football: F&M’s local connection looking forward to playing Muhlenberg
Franklin & Marshall’s Ty Tremba and Jack Harrison watched from the sideline each of the past two seasons as Muhlenberg beat the Diplomats on the final play of the game. They’re determined to author a different ending against a school located a few miles from where they played high school football. Tremba, a senior quarterback, and Harrison, a junior wide receiver, are Parkland graduates who have played leading roles for an F&M team averaging nearly 29 points per game.
Lehigh Valley college football: Muhlenberg’s defense ready for high-scoring Ursinus
The Muhlenberg College football team’s defense didn’t create as many splash plays as it would have liked during September. Its down-to-down consistency helped it reach the start of Centennial Conference play with a 3-0 record anyway. Saturday projects as the Mules’ toughest 2025 defensive assignment to date. Ursinus (3-0) will come to Allentown averaging 39.3 points per game. Muhlenberg senior defensive end Blaze Curry is among the Mules acquainted with the Bears’ scoring prowess.

Trevor Amorim worked through injuries and endured position-coach changes during his first three seasons with the Kutztown University football team. The Northern Lehigh High School graduate has forged a regular role in his final season with the Golden Bears. Amorim has played in all three games at wide receiver for Kutztown (3-0 overall), which heads to Shepherd (0-3) to open PSAC East play Saturday afternoon.
College football: Lehigh Valley products have key roles for 2-0 Ursinus Original
Dylan McHugh spent the time between the end of Ursinus’ 2024 football season and the start of 2025 preseason camp rehabbing his leg after suffering a broken fibula in October. Kendall Robinson used that same timespan to improve his off-field football knowledge and on-field versatility in the quest for more playing time. McHugh, an Emmaus High graduate, and Robinson, a Palmerton High product, have reaped the rewards of their dedication.
