MOSS BLUFF, La. (KPLC) - The weapons detector at Sam Houston High School worked as designed Wednesday morning, alerting staff to a possible weapon in a student’s backpack. But the search that followed didn’t find a gun, and now the company behind that detector says the failure points to a training and procedure gap, not a flaw in the technology. The Calcasieu Parish School Board says 18-year-old Ja’Vonte Pete set off the district’s OPENGATE weapon detector during morning screening.

The Vernon Parish School Board partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, delivering free books to local children every month from birth through age 5, a program officials say is not only continuing after Parton’s death, but growing because of it.
