How should college students handle their first credit card?
As millions of Americans around the country begin their freshman year at university, they are encountering many firsts on campus: Their first dorm room, their first college cafeteria and often, their first credit card. College is famously fertile ground for banks looking for new customers. Students starting out on their own need credit access, are developing spending habits, and are all living and attending classes close together, which makes for a rich environment for lenders to target.
Best states for backyard entertaining: 2026 ranking revealed
For decades, the assumption has been simple: Serious outdoor living happens in California and Florida. Sunshine, the thinking goes, is the only requirement that matters. A new state-by-state ranking compiled by The Luxury Pergola complicates that view. Georgia takes No. 1 with a composite score of 69.84.

Could shellfish farming fix Florida's algal bloom problem?
It’s a sight that stops Florida boaters and beachgoers in their tracks: a thick green sludge coating the water, smelling of rotten eggs and dead fish. Ashley Smyth, a coastal biogeochemist at the University of Florida, likens the color and consistency to guacamole. “I used to say pea soup, but then I moved to Florida, and no one down here eats pea soup,” she says. Either way, it’s a mixture no one wants to swim in.

Court documents alleged Huff was taken to the area in the trunk of a car and beaten and shot to death.
Inside the ‘shadow surge’ driving ICE arrests to new heights
After federal immigration agents ended their aggressive enforcement blitzes in the streets of Minneapolis and Chicago, President Donald Trump promised mass deportations with “a little bit of a softer touch.” Less focused on targeted cities, this quieter approach has led to a surge in immigration arrests across the country, The Marshall Project reports. Arrests began climbing gradually in March and by July had risen sharply.
