(CNN) - Cases of a severe stomach illness caused by a parasite called cyclosporiasis are surging across the country, with more than 30 states reporting infections. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Friday at least 843 confirmed cases and more than 1,500 possible cases across 31 states. At least 86 people have been hospitalized. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include explosive diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping, bloating and fatigue.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Students abducted in May by Islamic militants in Nigeria’s southwestern Oyo state have been rescued, the government said Friday. Government spokesman Bayo Onanuga did not specify the total number of students rescued, but authorities said at the time of the abductions on May 15 that more than 40 people had been abducted. One of the teachers abducted alongside the students was killed shortly afterward.

(CNN) - The U.S. Postal Service is releasing a new series of postage stamps featuring Barbie, which go on sale Saturday. The stamps depict the doll in 10 different career outfits. Barbie has represented more than 250 careers since her introduction in 1959. The new stamps are a third taller than standard commemorative stamps. The design team used bright colors, including classic Barbie pink, to capture what they described as “a spirit of fun.”

DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. (KMAX) - A California man is recovering from losing his hand after an explosive device he picked up detonated. Jason Turner was cleaning up trash along a beach in Crescent City following the July Fourth holiday when the reported explosion occurred. Turner’s daughter, Autumn Turner, says her father was picking up firework debris left behind when he spotted what looked like a small silver ball lying in the sand. But it wasn’t trash. It was a live, likely homemade firework.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Tennessee sophomore pitcher Tegan Kuhns has been drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals 32nd overall in the 2026 MLB Draft. Kuhns is the first Tennessee player selected in the 2026 draft and the 19th pitcher drafted from Tennessee since 2022. Since 2024, Tennessee has had 15 players chosen in the first four rounds of the draft. A native of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Kuhns was named Second-Team All-SEC as a starting pitcher in 2026.

REYNOLDS COUNTY, Mo. (CNN) - Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe is praising first responders for their rescue efforts following historic flooding in parts of southeastern Missouri. The Missouri State Highway Patrol released video showing more than 200 children and counselors who were evacuated from a camp in Reynolds County. Officials said all have since been safely reunited with their families.
