School budget referendums pass in Portland, South Portland, Lewiston

For some cities and towns in Maine, school budget referendum questions appeared on the ballot during the June 9 primary election. In South Portland, residents voted on a $76 million school budget. Unofficial results show 5,787 voted yes and 1,975 voted no. Earlier in the year, the school board voted to close James A. Kaler Elementary School and cut 80 staff positions. District leaders said the moves were necessary to keep the tax increase for residents from rising above 6%.

Antigoni's Pizza in Brunwsick reopens after shed fire

A pizza restaurant in Brunswick is back open after it was closed for more than a week due to a fire. Tyler Allen and his wife opened Antigoni's Pizza in 2019. On May 17, Allen said he got a call on his way home that the storage shed outside the restaurant was on fire. "Unfortunately, it was one giant candle," Allen said. " It was all of my dry storage and paper goods." Allen said he was told 911 was called 47 times.

UMA aviation maintenance program celebrates first graduates

AUGUSTA, Maine — The University of Maine at Augusta started the Aviation Maintenance Technician Program in 2024. Two years later, a dozen students graduated, the first to do so from this program. Nathan Roberts is from Friendship, Maine. He's had a love for aviation since he was young. "Just loved airplanes, being around airplanes, flying airplanes," Roberts recalled.
