Q&A: When speaking of stadiums, 'Ballpark' author believes Long Beach's less is more
That’s the 13 acres on Shoreline Drive that has been proposed as the beachhead for the Angels’ new home, should the franchise take Long Beach up on an offer to relocate it from its current Anaheim digs. While we’re waiting for things to happen, or not, imagine what a new Big A in the LBC could look like; Paul Goldberger has.

Weekend Reading: American Housewife | My Little Bird
Dark? Twisted? Hilarious? All of the above apply to American Housewife, a book of slightly screwball, slightly psychopathic (is that a word?) stories from Helen Ellis, published by Doubleday this winter. In this story, “Hello! Welcome to Book Club,” the author slingshots between irreverent and slightly demented, just like real life! American Housewife can be purchased at local booksellers and here and here. HELLO! WELCOME to Book Club. I’m your hostess. My Book Club name is Mary Beth.
Weekend Reading: The French Chef in America | My Little Bird
Alex Prud’homme’s new book, The French Chef in America: Julia Child’s Second Act, details the life of Alex’s grand-aunt, Julia Child, after she and husband Paul Child returned to the United States following years spent in public diplomacy (and cooking!) abroad. It shows us how Julia Child expanded from “the French chef” on public television to a modern American cook who retained a keen interest in technique and taste while expanding to other cuisines.
Slow and Steady Wins the Pulitzer
David Fahrenthold’s reporting notes, digitized for online viewers, have become a symbol of resistance against the dishonesty and empty promises that defined the 2016 election cycle. In his sixteenth year as a reporter at The Washington Post, the recipient of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in national reporting took on the herculean task of tracking down then-candidate Donald Trump’s philanthropic promises and business activities.
Harvard Undergraduate columnist on exclusive organizations
I was the kind of kid who would actually respond to the mass email freshly appointed Dean Rakesh Khurana sent to the incoming freshman class. I didn’t realize he was the kind of dean who would reply, asking to meet me. At the time, I was deep in the throes of competing with other prospective undergraduate literati to join the staff of The Harvard Advocate, the College’s long-lived literary magazine. I was very angry at having to prove myself to win a spot in an extracurricular.

A sense of necessity drew Omar El Akkad to war reporting, until another sense of necessity compelled him to write his stunning debut novel, American War. For 10 years El Akkad led a double life, working as an international war reporter for Canada’s The Globe and Mail and writing fiction between midnight and 5:00 a.m., squeezing in sleep here and there.

I Am Sorry To Think I Have Raised a Timid Son by Kent Russell: Review
Looking through the front matter of Kent Russell’s impressive essay collection, I was not surprised to find that none of the pieces had been previously published in the The New Yorker. Though all of Russell’s essays meet that magazine’s exacting standards of style and analysis, they are a little too raw, too close to the bone of American life, to line up next to The New Yorker’s staunchly liberal take on politics and culture.
