Reclaiming the human parts of a physician
When you step into medical training, you’re often told, both implicitly and sometimes even explicitly, that certain parts of you don’t belong. Sensitivity, doubt, or even just being messy and human can feel like liabilities in a culture that prizes efficiency, certainty, control, and always “having the answer.” Many physicians I work with in therapy describe learning early on to “toughen up,” to silence the softer, more questioning sides of themselves. Sensitivity becomes a problem.

Compromise would save Lamont from veto override on funding fight
Gov. Ned Lamont and legislative leaders said Tuesday they agreed on a compromise that would deliver $40 million in special education funding and $2.88 million in grants to Planned Parenthood and LGBTQ groups without a veto-override battle Wednesday.
CT advocates, families fearful amid Trump transgender executive orders
Connecticut reaffirmed Title IX protections last year that schools must treat all students equitably, regardless of their gender identity Sarah Celotto doesn’t know if she was being naive.
Federal grants paused: CT readies lawsuit following Trump order
The Trump administration’s directive to pause and review trillions of dollars in federal financial assistance faced immediate resistance from critics in Washington and Connecticut, including the threat of litigation from the state attorney general’s office. The memo sent to federal agencies late Monday set off a scramble as state agencies in Connecticut and across the country started to assess what effects it could have on critical programs.
CT could use land trusts to increase affordable housing, report says
A new report suggests that Connecticut’s laws make the state well-suited to improve its housing affordability through a little-known but growing model: community land trusts. A community land trust is a way to create and preserve affordable housing in which a nonprofit owns the land and develops housing. Sometimes, additional community gathering spaces such as gardens or shops can go on the land as well.
Speirs is another who falls into the galactic ego category. But he is even more of a political arsonist than either Rudd or Abbott.
Over the last couple of decades there have been few egos in politics that could match either Kevin Rudd or Tony Abbott. Rudd was your basic megalomaniac who believed he was not only the smartest person in any room, but also the smartest chap in the entire country. Maybe the world. Abbott, on the other hand, was weighed down by delusions of adequacy. Abbott’s reintroduction of knighthoods, and then awarding one to old Prince Philip, was possibly the funniest moment in Australian political history.
Is BHP for real this time?
Look, I know we have been down this road before but is it possible that BHP actually means what it says this time and that it’s about to embark on a series of projects that will provide South Australia’s economic backbone for decades to come? Yes, we have been here before. And it’s difficult not to be at least a little skeptical. There have been promises before, after all.
Can you have joy in politics?
Is there a place for joy and happiness in politics? It’s not a question that often occurs to me. Laughter being the most disturbing sound you can hear from an MP. It never sounds quite genuine. More like the MP has been programmed by AI with instructions to “sound human’’. But like every other political tragic, I’ve struggled to tear myself away from watching the Democratic National Convention this week.
What Is Conversational AI and How Does It Work?
Linkedin Facebook Twitter Youtube English French updated on August 20, 2024 With the growing importance of self-service support as a mean of engaging with customers, firms are seeking ways of developing advanced customer support to create customer satisfaction. Conversational AI is on the forefront of this change through enabling business organizations to offer better and natural-like interface. But what is Conversational AI, and how it can be implemented?
Lessons from the past for Vincent Tarzia
Far be it from me, humble hack, to offer advice to new Liberal leader Vincent Tarzia about how he should go about his business, but maybe it’s ok to point out a few lessons from history. To have a quick squizz at some of his predecessors in the job and see if there are any guardrails the neophyte leader could put in place to avoid some of the mistakes of the past. With Labor holding power for 18 of the last 22 years, Tarzia follows a long list of opposition leaders.
What Is Conversational Analytics?
Contact centers have always been at the forefront of adopting technologies that can enhance the interaction between agents and customers. One of the most transformative technologies in recent years is conversational analytics. But what exactly is conversational analytics, and why is it becoming an indispensable tool in call centers? Conversational analytics stands as a crucial technology in customer service.
South Australia. The nation's North Korea. A one-party state.
South Australia is becoming the nation’s own little North Korea. A one-party state. Sure, we go through the process of having elections. But like North Korea, the result is never really in doubt. There was a shock last year in the North Korean poll when some official candidates received less than 100 per cent of the vote. In South Australia, the shock that Labor looks likely to win the seat of Dunstan is a bit less.
The AFL must hate the game's fans
The start of the AFL year is upon us and it’s hard to remember a more low-key start to the season. And I say this as a Swans fan whose team is playing tonight. As ever the AFL, thinking themselves the smartest people in the room, reveal themselves to be the dumbest. In reaching for the gimmick, they again ignore the fans. There was general relief when the Gillon McLachlan era came to an end. Despite his many Melbourne-based boosters, McLachlan was a terrible chief executive.
The Nuclear pipe dream
This latest nuclear power fever dream from Peter Dutton is really quite odd. Relying, as it does, on a technology that doesn’t really exist at the moment, on costs that are unknowable, in locations yet to be determined and on a timeframe that would be several decades away. Or maybe it’s not odd. Maybe it’s just the last gasp of a party that knows it has lost the battle on renewable energy but can’t admit it. Instead, it wants to talk about nuclear as if that’s a realistic option.
The Trumpian threat to this week's good shipbuilding news
It’s been a good week for the SA economy and the shipbuilding industry. The confirmation that six Hunter frigates will be built here, followed by the AUKUS nuclear subs gives a bit of confidence to an industry that changes direction more often than prime Eddie Betts weaving his way towards goal. Still, it’s not all good news. We need to talk about the giant orange blob on the horizon in the form of Donald Trump. Trump’s America First mantra is just about his entire world view.
Arizona is about to make a mess of overseas military votes
Maricopa County Elections employees check military and large print ballots that have to be converted onto a size ballot that the tabulation machines can read at the Maricopa County Elections headquarters in Phoenix on Nov. 9, 2020. The workers that do this process work in pairs, a registered Republican and a registered Democrat. Arizona military families stationed overseas are at risk of not getting their ballots in time to vote for their next commander-in-chief.
Arizona is about to make a mess of overseas military votes
Arizona military families stationed overseas are at risk of not getting their ballots in time to vote for their next commander-in-chief. Recounts make sense, but they take time In 2022, lawmakers passed — and the governor signed — Senate Bill 1008, which lowers the threshold for triggering an automatic recount in close races.
More bad news ahead for home buyers and renters
After a steep rise in 2023, Adelaide house prices will be flat for most of the next 12 months before a drop in interest rates leads to a strong rebound in 2025, according to a new forecast by Oxford Economics. Adelaide house prices have more than recovered from their falls towards the end of 2022, jumping 10 per cent over 2023 to a median selling price of $806,100, according to figures supplied by Oxford.

How generative AI will upend the doctor-patient relationship
After decades of “doctor knows best,” the traditional physician-patient relationship is on the verge of a monumental shift. Generative AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing are poised to give people significantly more power and control—not just over their personal lives and professional tasks but over their own medical health, as well.
Mourning real people is one thing, but is it ok to lament fictional characters as well?
To an extent I can see why people get so upset and teary when celebrities die. The untimely death of Matthew Perry the other week being the latest case in point. Now, the appeal of Friends always bypassed me. To quote something I seem to recall the great Billy Connolly saying when describing Neighbours many years ago it was “just a bunch of fwits avoiding the furniture for half an hour’’. But fair enough. Friends appealed to many and Perry was part of that.
Cricket, like football, tennis and golf should not be at the Olympics
So, now we are going to have cricket at the Olympics. Another example that nothing drives and inspires the International Olympic Commission quite like money does. Cricket at the Olympics is entirely unnecessary, except the IOC has its greedy eyes on bolstering broadcast revenue in India. Apparently, Indian broadcasters paid around $US20 million for the right to show next year’s event in Paris. By throwing in a few 20-20 games in Los Angeles in 2028, it could be 10 times that number.
Two days to go. If you don't know, find out.
One more time for the hard of listening. With only two days to go until the referendum it seems important to point out that if the Yes votes gets up, no one loses anything at all. That may seem hard to believe amid the welter of disinformation and lies that are routinely spouted by the No side but it’s true. Who you going to believe?

Nemesis provides depressing insight into what drives MPs. Hint. Not you. After watching the second part of the ABC’s Nemesis documentary this week on the 10 years of the last Coalition government, it is easy to see why Australia is facing such grave policy challenges on so many fronts. Because for a decade nothing really got done. Instead, Australia was held hostage to the whims, selfishness… Can Libs sell raising taxes for 90 per cent of workers? Well, if nothing else, it’s bold. Possibly even brave.
SA’s ‘unfair advantage’ that could make us the nation’s spacecraft landing pad
South Australia can capitalise on its geography and become a regular landing spot for spacecraft from many different international space agencies and private companies, according to the head of the Australian Space Agency. ASA chief executive Enrico Palermo said a spacecraft from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), returning from the Martian moon Phobos would land in SA in 2029 and he expected more would follow.
Oak Hills restaurant open, with same operator
NORWALK, Conn. — The Oak Hills Park restaurant is open for the season, under an altered lease agreement with the Oak Hills Park Authority. Dry Dock Smokin’ Aces (DDSA) started with an idea of being a high-end restaurant when it opened last year, OHPA member Alan Dutton said last week to the Board of Estimate and Taxation.

Best Showdown moments: David Koch and John Olsen on their top three
It was ten seasons ago now, but the memories remain fresh for Port Adelaide president David Koch. After all the battles, all the fights and argy-bargy, footy returned to Adelaide Oval in 2014 and revolutionised not only footy but how a city saw itself. Mr Koch, said the club “couldn’t wait to get back to Adelaide Oval’’ for that first Showdown after 40 years at Football Park, a place he said “always seemed a bit foreign to Port Adelaide’’.

Michael McGuire: Green power debate is dead and facts killed it
After all the arguments, after all the disinformation and the fear campaigns the evidence is in – renewable energy is going to provide far cheaper electricity for South Australians for generations to come. This is not an ideological statement. It’s not even an anti-fossil fuel argument. Or even necessarily about climate change. It’s simply about facts and logic. It’s about what the numbers are telling us.
Digital marketers should take a bigger role in ethical oversight of AI
Digital marketing leaders are looking to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to achieve a 360-degree view of customers, since deeper personalisation is in a tight position. Consume, since deeper personalisation is in a tight position. Consumers’ concerns about how their data is used to target them. As well as the corresponding oversight required by legislation and regulators demand a nuanced approach to the technologies and practices relied on to leverage customer data.
Virtual organizations in health care
In almost all organizations, an employee has a supervisor responsible for guiding the employee in doing their job. This requires good communication between the two. Currently, in medicine, especially during stays in the hospital, there is a similar relationship between physicians: The attending physician recruits the necessary specialist physicians to provide care for the patient and supervises their care.

More physician responsibility for patient care
Medicine today is single encounter-oriented, with the patient medical record structured to support one encounter at a time, where an encounter is either a single outpatient visit or an inpatient stay. The problem with this single encounter orientation is that it often takes a number of encounters to get a correct diagnosis and that care for a medical condition could extend over many encounters before the medical situation can be resolved.
A universal patient medical record
Today, most medical organizations have gotten away from paper medical records and use computerized electronic medical record systems (EMRs). The U.S. government has encouraged the use of such systems, no matter how large or small these systems are.
For Menlo Park teens, the San Francisco music scene was magical back in the day

Jac Dalton’s I Can Almost Taste the Rain released for drought relief
The idea of using music to raise money for struggling farmers first took root in Jac Dalton’s mind around nine years ago. Dalton, who also has a chiropractic business at Maylands in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, opened his door to find a client who had left their farm and were moving interstate because of the drought. “The look on their face – something just snapped,’’ Dalton said yesterday. It has been a long gestation since.

Kids told to learn from Smith and Warner
Adelaide Test, Day 2 report Read below: The Pimms flows at ‘outback’ Oval party In among the whole Steve Smith-David Warner nonsense in South Africa, there was the familiar cry of “won’t someone think of the children”. The obvious worry was that Smith and Warner were poor role models for the nation’s cricket-loving kiddies. Turns out they were perfect role models, just not in the way intended.
The air force is marking 50 years of the P-3 Orion with a low-level fly past over Adelaide on Friday
The low-rumbling thrum of four massive propeller engines fills the air and the old plane makes its way down the runway at RAAF Base Edinburgh and heads into the rainy Adelaide sky. It sways and it rocks. It creaks and it groans. It’s louder and a more elemental, primitive experience than stepping aboard a modern passenger jet. And for 50 years the P-3 Orion has been Australia’s eyes and ears all over the world.
