CORRESPONDENCE 02 December 2025 Two Comment articles on reforms to animal research rightly call for compassion and innovation (T. J. Herron et al. Nature 646, 799–801 (2025); K. C. K. Lloyd Nature 646, 802–803; 2025). But ending animal studies is premature, and other options, known as new approach methodologies or novel alternative methods (NAMs), are not morally pure.

Unexplained early deaths in EMERALD-1: is liver failure the reason?

We read with great interest the Article on the EMERALD-1 trial.1 The primary endpoint of the trial was progression-free survival and, for 78 patients, death occurred before progression: 37 (27%) of 136 patients in the durvalumab plus bevacizumab group, 24 (17%) of 144 patients in the durvalumab plus placebo group, and 17 (11%) of 149 patients in the placebo group.
