Trump admin approves Michigan tunnel for oil pipeline
The Trump administration Wednesday issued a permit for Enbridge’s Line 5 tunnel and pipeline project beneath the Straits of Mackinac after using “special emergency permitting procedures” to speed approval. But the project cannot move forward quickly because Michigan’s highest court last week ordered state energy regulators to redo their environmental review of the proposed tunnel which would include a 4-mile pipeline under the waterbody that separates the state’s two peninsulas.

What I Saw at the Fracking Revolution
Marty Whiteman had enough natural gas under his hayfield to make him quite rich when the fracking boom swept through his rugged corner of West Virginia 20 years ago. But it didn't make him rich, because someone else owned the gas. Decades before, he'd decided against buying the "mineral rights" under his land. He thought the worst thing that could happen was that a coal mine might tunnel underneath. Instead, he found himself with a 10-acre industrial site to host three gas wells.

EPA floats changes to NEPA implementation rules
EPA has proposed what it describes as “minor changes” to its procedures under the National Environmental Policy Act, the law that requires agencies to consider the environmental actions of projects and permits. Many of the proposal’s changes are meant to comply with laws passed in 2023 and 2025 amending NEPA amid complaints from Republicans and some Democrats that environmental reviews have been increasing the expense and time of new projects.

The Trump administration is supporting a pipeline company over ranchers in a Supreme Court dispute about how much money the company should pay landowners for property it condemned for a gas project. The move comes as the administration pushes to make it easier to build gas pipelines across the country, teeing up more disputes with landowners as to how much companies should pay when they use eminent domain to take property from unwilling sellers.
