Trump’s Funding ‘Pause’ Throws States, Health Industry Into Chaos
States and the nation’s health industry were thrown into disarray after the Trump administration ordered Monday that the government freeze nearly all federal grants at 5 p.m. ET Tuesday, a sweeping directive that at least initially appeared to include funding for Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance program that covers more than 70 million Americans.
Opinion | Transgender women belong in women's sports
A guest column by Patsy Neal recently published in the Cap Times, ("Why I wouldn't want to compete against transgender women") makes yet another tired argument against the inclusion of transgender women and girls in sports. I’m pretty fed up with this completely wrongheaded and needlessly distracting line of attack. Transgender people belong in sports that align with their gender identity, without having to undergo invasive medical examinations or questioning.
Tone Madison's favorite songs of 2023, pt. III

Few years in recent memory have felt quite as alive as 2023 when it comes to new local music releases. While keeping up with the year’s explosive pace of releases was a time-devouring endeavor, the result was worthwhile. As a result of the bounty of new releases, our year-end coverage will be the most extensive it has ever been, because we firmly believe that everything we’re showcasing deserves this type of notice.

Finding Jesus in the Strip Club
On November 2, the Showtime Gentlemen’s Club in Waco, Texas, closed for business. On Good Friday, 20 years ago, the first time I walked into a strip club, Waco was home to three such establishments. Now there are none. I didn’t go to that first strip club as a worker or a customer but for what would become the genesis of Jesus Said Love outreach.

One last rip
Vol. 28 ESSAY | NOW READ THIS | NOW WATCH THIS | FINAL FRAME Share I remember the first time I stepped foot into the Dustbowl. My friends and I were shooting an episode of our web series, “Chapel,” and had a connection with one of the keyholders at the very DIY, very illegal indoor skate park space where we were going to film a fight scene.
Smoke and Fire
Vol. 27 ESSAY | NOW READ THIS | WHAT I’M READING | FINAL FRAME Anyone else spend the last week somewhat (OK, a lot) depressed about the smoke in the air and the general state of the climate crisis? I don’t think it was just me.
"But I'm A Cheerleader" skewers heteronormative culture with pleasure
I was 18 years old when Jamie Babbit’s But I’m A Cheerleader first appeared, like a beacon, in my local Blockbuster Video store. I wasn’t out yet (no more than saying “I think I could be attracted to someone regardless of gender, but I dunno” to a few close friends), but I sure as shit was watching every scrap of queer and even subtextually queer media I could get my paws on.

Solidarity Forever
Vol. 26 ESSAY | LIVE & IN PERSON | NOW READ THIS | A QUOTE | FINAL FRAME The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) went on strike earlier this week, bringing movies and television to a grinding halt. The dispute is over everything from fair wages to working hours and conditions, after negotiations with the big studios went nowhere. Why should we in Middle America care about this? More than impacting your favorite shows and movies, this strike gets at the dark heart of our modern capitalist hellscape.
Orphaned thoughts
Vol. 25 Essay | Now Read This | Poetry Corner | Nature Nook | A friend recently said, “You’re not really an adult until both of your parents have died.” Obviously, this isn’t technically true. And obviously, plenty of people grow up without one or both parents, or exist in more complicated family structures. Having very recently experienced the death of my dad, 25 years after my mom died, it still got me thinking. I have felt a sense of being untethered since dad passed. Not adrift.
Ridgefield High School Post Grad Event Needs Support
For the 39th time, the Ridgefield High School PTSA is organizing an event to be held the night of graduation to provide a safe way for the Class of 2023 to celebrate this huge milestone together. Each year, over 90% of the graduating class attends, and the rest wish they had! The RHS Post Grad event was started in Ridgefield following the tragic death of one graduate in 1983 as the result of a drunk driver (a fellow graduate ) leaving a party hosted by the father of another fellow graduate.

My Trans Day of Visibility (and Snacks)
Vol. 24 ESSAY | NOW READ THIS | READ LOCAL | IN-PERSON THINGS | FINAL FRAME That is the question today, on International Transgender Day of Visibility. On the one hand, seeking greater visibility for a marginalized population of people is a crucial part of making sure they can’t be so easily swept aside or dismissed entirely. It’s how more people might see something familiar in themselves and be able to step into a more authentic existence. It’s role modeling and community and joy.

Now, Not Later, Is the Time to Speak Up for Trans People
Vol. 23 CALL TO ACTION | NOW READ THIS | FINAL FRAME I’m skipping an essay this week in favor of bending your ears/eyes toward a couple of important calls to action. If you’re in the Madison area this week Saturday, March 18, a grassroots group of people is organizing a Day of Resistance to Trans Genocide that aims to raise awareness and drive action to oppose the onslaught of anti-LGBTQ, particularly anti-trans, legislation and rhetoric that’s begun to swamp our state and country.
To be a luminous gender vessel
Vol. 22 ESSAY | NOW READ THIS | LISTEN UP | FINAL FRAME I submitted the following essay for a journal submission themed around “luminous gender vessel.” It didn’t get selected. It’s fine! So I’m printing it here. I’m thinking about this stuff a lot right now in particular, with the absolute onslaught of anti-LGBTQ (and specifically anti-trans) legislation and hate now rolling across our country. I am not the only one, nor nearly the most vulnerable.

It doesn't have to be like this.
Vol. 21 ESSAY | NOW READ THIS | LISTEN UP | FINAL FRAME Every other post these days is "My dream is to live in [remote place] with my [SO/animals/friends]" I'm guessing because society is kind of terrifying right now for anyone who isn't a complete asshole. But that means there are enough of us who want a better world to make one. I’m holding onto that thought extra hard this week, in light of a seemingly endless torrent of bad news. It doesn’t have to be like this.

Madison is “perfect” for LGBTQ folks, if you’re cis, white, and well-off
Another year, another misleading Madison headline. This most recent entry comes courtesy of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and their annual Municipal Equality Index. Local news headlines in December took the 100/100 rating and immediately crowed that our city earned a “perfect” score. The real story is, as usual, far more complex.
First they came for the drag queens
Vol. 20 In This Issue: Essay | Now Read This | 2022 Book & Movie Lists | Final Frame [Writer’s note: Drag can and is performed by people of any/all gender identities and sexualities. Sometimes there’s stripping, sometimes (more often) there is not. Do not get your idea of what drag is from FOX News or anyone other than actual drag performers.] I saw my first drag show when I was maybe 15 or 16.

Real and Present Danger
Vol. 14 - Dec. 13, 2021 In this Issue: Essay |Read Local | The Big Picture | Now Read This | Nature! | Final Frame I’ve said or written the phrase “I’m angry, but not surprised” hundreds of times in the last year alone. I’m sure I’m not alone. I understand more and more each day that what’s happening now is not unprecedented, that abuses have been heaped on people less privileged than me and mine for a long, long time. But I refuse to give up my anger about it. I need that anger to drive me to act.
