A surface electromyography dataset comparing anatomical and equidistant electrode placement for hand gesture recognition
Abstract Gesture recognition via surface electromyography could make the control of robotic devices more intuitive. We present a dataset that contains not only common hand movements (relax, wave in, fist, wave out, and fingers spread) and finger gestures (stretch index finger, victory sign, pistol sign, number four, and thumb up) but also four functional grips (hold a mug, pick up coaster, hold paper cup, and hold a pen).
Seal whisker-inspired fully printed MEMS flow sensor via micron-scale soft material additive manufacturing
Abstract Seals are renowned for their exceptional ability to hunt, a capability attributed to the uniquely evolved whisker morphology that suppresses vortex-induced vibrations and enables them to track hydrodynamic trails in the water. In this study, we present the first direct experimental comparison of replicated whisker geometries from harbor seals, gray seals, and sea lions, integrated into an artificial follicle–sinus complex flow sensor.

Temporary consolidation and excavation of artifacts at waterlogged archaeological sites - Scientific Reports
Abstract Ensuring the preservation of fragile artifacts from waterlogged archaeological sites demands the advancement of extraction techniques that uphold both safety and the integrity of historical data. Conventionally employed extraction materials are predominantly applicable to sites exhibiting high soil stability and low moisture content, whereas the recovery of artifacts from waterlogged contexts remains technically challenging.
Mitotic polarity oscillation promotes epithelial tumor progression
Abstract Mitosis of epithelial cells requires a transient loss of epithelial polarity [1-5]. However, the nature of this mitotic polarity oscillation and its functional consequences for epithelial development are not fully understood. Here we show that the Crumbs (Crb) complex, a key regulator of epithelial polarity, is lost from the membrane during mitosis, and the Crb mutant phenotype is ameliorated when cell division is inhibited.
Facilitated removal of metal from diamond wire saw silicon powder waste via surfactant-assisted HCl + L-tartaric acid mixed leaching
In recent years, photovoltaic (PV) solar energy has developed rapidly as the main factor guiding energy transformation [1], which not only alleviates the energy crisis but also reduces carbon emissions and promotes sustainable economic development [2], [3]. PV silicon wafers are produced by cutting monocrystalline silicon rods using a diamond wire cutting machine [4].

Undulating Seal Whiskers Evolved Optimal Wavelength‐to‐Diameter Ratio for Efficient Reduction in Vortex‐Induced Vibrations (Adv. Sci. 2/2024)
Graphical Abstract Biomimetics Phocid seal whiskers possess a unique undulating geometry that reduces vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) and helps the seal track its prey. In article number 2304304, Amar M. Kamat, Ajay Giri Prakash Kottapalli, and co-workers study the form-function relationships in harbour and grey seal whiskers. The results indicate that the wavelength-to-mean diameter ratio (λ/Dm) of the undulating whiskers may evolve to possess an optimal value of 4.5 to minimize VIV.

Does climate change surprise the profitability of energy firms? Empirical evidence from China
RESEARCH ARTICLE Abstract The energy sector matters the sustainable development directly and is sensitive to climate change. A few empirical studies concentrate on how climate change influences firm performance. Climate change brings higher production costs and lower efficiency on the supply side and leads to beneficial sale performance and improves profit. However, it is ambiguous to the relationship of supply–demand and revenue-cost levels, and their change is not consistent.

Networks of conforming or nonconforming individuals tend to reach satisfactory decisions
Many real-life decisions where one out of two actions must be chosen can be modeled on networks consisting of individuals who are either coordinating, that is, take an action only if sufficient neighbors are also doing so, or anticoordinating, that is, take an action only if too many neighbors are doing the opposite. It is not yet known whether such networks tend to reach a state where every individual is satisfied with his decision.
