Why was the study undertaken? The molecular background driving the biological and clinical characteristics of acral melanoma remain unclear. A novel disease classification method has been developed by integrating multi-omics data analysis and network-based disease gene prediction algorithm, CIPHER-SC. What does this study add? We identified two distinct subtypes of acral melanoma that exhibit significant differences in clinical behaviour, cellular mechanisms and molecular profiles.
