It may seem odd in the current environment, but it turns out that pretty much the entire electronics industry rests on the concept of ‘fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory’, or FRAND. This is about standards and patents. If a patented technology is included in a standard such as 3GPP, Wi-Fi, PCI Express, MPEG video decoding or Qi wireless charging, then the patent needs to be licensed to companies on a fair and reasonable basis.
