Action RPG roguelites have been a successful formula for the subgenre for many years. The isometric view lends itself very well to the fast-paced action, and the procedural map generation creates the endless gameplay loop that doesn’t get repetitive when the meta progression and customizations are well-designed. However, the subgenre has been dominated by the Hades franchise for many years, and it’s becoming harder for new titles to break through.

Video games as a medium revolve around player choices, but some games lean heavily into this aspect, offering a dynamic world and story based on player choices. These types of games can span multiple genres, from simpler visual novels to action-packed RPGs. The “Choices Matter” tag has become somewhat of a controversial feature, at least for me personally, as it is a challenging design approach and it’s hard to get it right. But games that do get it right are always among my favorite titles.

The roguelike genre nowadays is known for endless meta progression and hundreds of hours of gameplay. It’s both an enticing feature of these games and an intimidating aspect for newer players. We take our genre knowledge for granted, diving into a new roguelike title knowing the game is going to feel so much different in a few dozen hours. But for players unfamiliar with them, it’s hard to recommend a roguelike that’s quick to get into and enjoy for a short play session.

We had a student-run zine back in college and I had an interview with one of my favorite game developers.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My grandfather used to have a typewriter that I used to play with before I even knew how to write. I wish I had one now!

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Word and Google Docs are my primary tools for writing.
