Illinois's Chief Illiniwek To Perform At High School Basketball Game
The University of Illinois retired their mascot Chief Illiniwek in 2007 after facing pressure and sanctions from the NCAA, but one high school in Illinois says it plans on bringing back the mascot for its basketball game. The Twitter account for the Tuscola (Ill.) School District announced that Chief Illiniwek will perform at halftime on Jan. 9 when the Tuscola Warriors play the Sullivan Redskins: The Chief has waited to make his Tuscola debut until the year 2015. That time is now.
Getting Screwed With Your Pants On: A Guide To Ignoring The NFL Today
Even by dismal NFL standards, the Colts' stadium deal is fucking bullshit. There's Jerry Richardson using the same extortion mechanics behind public financing to secure "private" construction financing via Personal Seat Licenses, and then there's the Indianapolis Colts just screwing the whole goddamn state of Indiana right through their pleated pants.
Kobe Flips Out Because Jeremy Lin, Rest Of Lakers Are Morons
Kobe Bryant hit a clutch three last night to bring the Lakers within one of the Grizzlies at Staples Center. He did this with 24 seconds remaining in the game, which meant that Los Angeles needed to foul and stop the clock. Jeremy Lin, guarding the Memphis ball-handler, did nothing. So Kobe took matters into his own hands, after a bunch of screaming and handwaving that was entirely warranted. [TWC SportsNet]
The Cupcakeceratops And Other Delicious Dinosaur Mash-Ups
Snacktaku is always on the lookout for new things to eat, but we also accept new ways to eat old things. Spanish artist Alejo Malia's mouthwatering Jurassic Sweet series fits the bill quite nicely. Any couple hundred people want to split a Donutsaurus Rex?
A Bad Bing Update Took Out Yahoo Search Yesterday
News from the land of unloved search engines: yesterday, both Bing and Yahoo had an outage (don't worry, I didn't notice either), caused by a coding booboo from Microsoft. According to a Reuters report, Microsoft pushed out a Bing update on Friday afternoon without bug-testing it properly first. Because Bing's search mojo actually powers Yahoo search, the update took out both engines for a while, causing irated users to blow up MySpace and Bebo with complaints.
Polar's A300 Is a Solid Fitness Tracker You Shouldn't Buy
Polar has come a long way since its first fitness tracker, the Polar Loop, launched in 2013. Just months ago the Finnish company released the Polar M400, a lovely and capable GPS running watch with 24/7 fitness tracking capabilities. It was sweet enough to earn a coveted spot on our Best Fitness Trackers list. Today, Polar is announcing the A300. It's, basically, just the M400, but without the GPS, and it's $40 cheaper. No sale.
Acer's Chromebook 15 Is Honkin' Huge
Chromebooks just got big. Acer's new gargantuan 15.6-inch Chromebook 15 is leading off its suite of releases for this year's CES, and it's sweeping up the award for Biggest, Cheapest Chromebook right off the bat. The new Chromebook 15's big ol' display comes in two resolution flavors: Full HD 1920x1080 or 1366x768, the latter of which is probably gonna look preeeetty shitty at that size.
Watch The Space Station Go Flying Past The Moon
Thanks to the internet (and just a tiny little bit of math), Israeli photographer Gadi Eidelheit managed to get himself in position to see something quite unique: the International Space Station flying in front of the moon. Even better, he caught the whole thing on video. In order to capture the video, Eidelheit used HeavensAbove, an astronomy website, to track the position of the ISS relative to the moon.
Sony Is Giving PSN Users Gifts To Make Up For The Hacking
Over Christmas, the self-styled group of lulz-seeking lowlifes known as the Lizard Squad DDoSed the shit out of PSN and Xbox Live, ruining Christmas for untold numbers of 8-year-olds, and by extension their parents. Law enforcement is slowly but surely bringing them to justice, but now Sony is also trying to make amends to users.
Once Upon A Time In The West Is the Best Western and You Should Watch It
The opening is iconic. In eerie silence three outlaws take over a rail station somewhere in the west to set up a trap for the soon to arrive hero. After locking up the ticket clerk the three outlaws each take a position at different ends of the station. Suffocating closeups of each outlaw is intercut with wide shots of the surroundings. The train arrives and the three outlaws and the camera move in synchronization.
Drinking Mellow Corn, a Whiskey That Is Like "Bourbon on Steroids"
I was in Kentucky last week, and I did not drink bourbon. Instead, I ended up with a bright yellow bottle of Mellow Corn, an cheap and obscure corn whiskey that has become suddenly trendy in certain Brooklyn and San Francisco bars. It's Friday afternoon, you've made it through the long week, and it's time for Happy Hour, Gizmodo's weekly booze column. A cocktail shaker full of innovation, science, and alcohol. Boo(ze)! Bourbon, of course, is having a national moment.
The FBI Thought This Guy's Joke Was a Legit Threat to CNN
Remember when the FBI issued a bulletin about the Sony hackers' threatening a media outlet? Turns out the threat was actually a thinly veiled joke made by David Garrett, Jr., a homeland security blogger from Knoxville, Tennessee. The punchline: David got to spend his New Year's Day being questioned by the Feds! There are a couple of lessons to be learned here. The main one is not to make anonymous threats on the internet, especially when the FBI is involved and millions of dollars are on the line.
Watch Man Solve World's Largest Rubik's Cube-And Try Not To Get Dizzy
If watching the rapid flip of the colors doesn't make you queasy, take a gander at this astounding timelapse video, which shows Kenneth Brandon tackling a 17x17x17 Rubik's Cube-type puzzle. He speeds the whole thing up, so that the puzzle goes from scrambled to solved in just six minutes. The Over the Top cube was designed by Oskar van Deventer and there are only a handful of these expensive, 3D-printed puzzle monstrosities in existence.
Watch Lord Kelvin's Thunderstorm Create Electricity With Falling Water
Here's a slick new video that showcases a very old concept. In 1867, Lord Kelvin found a way to generate sparks (and a surprisingly high voltage) using twin showers of water. This video will show you why it works — as well as why it doesn't work quite well enough. The folks at Veritasium have a cool video that shows us how two showers of water, manipulated just right, can generate a massive voltage. It's called Lord Kelvin's thunderstorm or, for the less poetic among us, Lord Kelvin's water dropper.
Leo DiCaprio's Beach Party Shows Startling Drop in Model Percentage
Leonardo DiCaprio, actor and founding member of the Pussy Posse, is a well known babe wrangler and party boy about town. Sadly, it seems the cold winds of January have blown in a steep drop in the percents model of his parties. Has the playboy fallen into a rut? Leonardio DiCaprio's Best Summer Ever never ended, apparently.
See Which Bands Are Taking Up Most Room on Your iPhone
iOS 8 brought with it an avalanche of new features and options, but one that you might not have noticed yet is the ability to break down how much storage space each album and artist is using up. If you need to trim down a bloated music library then this feature can help you spot the worst offenders when it comes to hogging precious room on your device. Being able to see how much storage space your music is using up is an option that's been around for a while, but now you can get more details.
Mark Schultz Is Mad That Foxcatcher Implied A Homosexual Relationship
Foxcatcher has been out for seven weeks, but former Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz apparently just watched it this week, because he's furious with director Bennett Miller over the implications that Schultz had some sort of sexual relationship with insane, murderous billionaire John du Pont. If you've seen Foxcatcher, you might remember a scene where Steve Carell's du Pont wakes up Channing Tatum's Schultz so he can practice wrestling on a mat in his mansion.
Gucci Mane And His Enormous Gut Flaunt Boxing Skills
Watching this video of Gucci Mane going through a boxing workout seemingly in his living room—which, why?—you're immediately struck by two things: one, dude has no form, but I'm still not anxious to be on the other side of those shots; and two, man alive, that is one massive belly. (But don't tell him I said that, okay?) [Nah Right]
Is This The New TIE Fighter From Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
Some potentially new Star Wars: The Force Awakens concept art has dropped, and it appears to reveal an updated version of the Empire's preferred vehicle for space combat. Take a grain of salt, be prepared for a potential spoiler, and then check it out below! As you can see, the image comes from Indie Revolver, which has found a great deal of Episode VII concept so far, and means this is probably legit.
Get Ready: Bitterly Cold Weather Will Grip the Eastern U.S. Next Week
An intense outbreak of cold weather will descend on the eastern two-thirds of the country next week, with widespread low temperatures in the single digits and below zero for a couple of days. Lows in the teens are even possible as far south as Alabama and Mississippi. People are still a little...touchy...about the polar vortex after last winter. I don't think we should be afraid of using the term as long as it's responsible and in the proper context.
Ga. Police Chief: I Accidentally Shot My Wife While She Slept in Bed
William McCollom, the Peachtree City police chief who shot his wife early Thursday morning, said in a 911 call that the shooting occurred as he moved the gun from his bed while his wife slept. "…the gun was in the bed," he said. "I went to move it to put it to the side and it went off." Later, when the operator asked him to identify himself, McCollom gave her his official title. "Yeah, unfortunately yes," he said when asked to confirm his job as police chief.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Is Getting A New, Rogue-Centric Version
AlthoughX-Men: Days of Future Past managed to incorporate almost every movie X-Man past, there was very little of Anna Paquin's Rogue in it. And yet apparently director Bryan Singer shot a great deal of Rogue footage — footage that will be included in a new edition of the movie which Fox will release on Blu-ray later this year.
Weddings Are Boring, But This Kid Knows a Good Dance Move
Weddings: Good for you. Nobody cares. This kid, Harlan, and his sweet dance moves (actually, it's more like one really good move): A lone bright spot in several dark hours interacting with people's relatives. Applause to you, Harlan. What's The Best Retelling Of A Story From The Villain's Point Of View?
We all know that a villain is just a hero who needs to get a better PR department. The "bad guy" seldom believes that he or she is actually bad, and usually has reasons for his or her actions. But what's your favorite story that shows the villain's point of view on a set of events? Please include a picture, book cover, poster, clip, comics panel or other piece of artwork for your chosen "villain POV" story. And please mention the name, and why it was so great.
What's Going On With Chip Kelly And The Eagles?
It's been a fairly quiet season for the Eagles, but with this week's firing of vice president of player personnel Tom Gamble, and rumors of tension between head coach Chip Kelly and GM Howie Roseman, something very big is going to happen soon. Maybe. If you believe Twitter. We've heard whispers of a power struggle between Kelly and Roseman, so there's probably not nothing here.
Holy Crap, This "Realistic" Popeye Figurine Is Terrifying

Eddie Redmayne Shows The World His Adorable Audition For Bilbo Baggins
Eddie Redmayne stopped by the The Graham Norton and revealed this interesting little tidbit about his audition for the role of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. It's just downright adorable. There's actually a whole heap of adorable in this clip — from Redmayne confessing his desire to get into the Harry Potter movies, "There was a whole family of Ginger people and I thought that somehow I might be a part of that at some point. It never happened," to Anna Kendrick's response to the Bilbo voice.
This Guy Had A T-Bird Indicator Stalk In His Arm For 51 Years
Like many classic car owners, I have a number of boxes of miscellaneous parts around in sheds and closets. It's not the best way to store parts by a long shot. But I think it may be better than having them crammed into my arm, like Arthur Lampitt did for 51 years with a Thunderbird turn-signal stalk. This wasn't really Mr.Lampitt's genius way of making sure he'd always have a supply of hard-to-get trim bits for his classic.
Why the Flu Vaccine Doesn't Always Work
The flu is going to be brutal this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is already seeing more cases than usual, and we've yet to hit peak flu season. To make matters worse, this year's flu vaccine is less effective than usual, thanks to decisions that were made nearly a year ago. Making the flu vaccine is like predicting the future, and predicting the future is hard. Flu vaccine production is a slow, old-fashioned process of growing viruses in chicken eggs.

Heroically Lazy DeMarcus Cousins Takes An Entire Possession Off

The Weirdness Of The NHL's First Modern Outdoor Game
On September 27, 1991, the Rangers and Kings played a preseason game on a rink built in a Las Vegas parking lot. Despite the novelty of the outdoor game being dulled somewhat by the various Winter Classics and Heritage Classics and Stadium Series, and despite the '91 game occasionally feeling like a big ad for Caesar's Palace, that Vegas game still stands up.
An Ancient Greek Palindrome Has Been Discovered on this Amulet
Archaeologists working in Cyprus have discovered a 1,500-year-old amulet with a 59-letter inscription that reads the same backwards as it does forwards. As LiveScience reports, the amulet, which measures 1.4 inches by 1.6 inches, was discovered at the ancient city of Nea Paphos in Southwest Cyprus. On one side there are several images, including a wrapped mummy lying on a boat (likely the Egyptian god Osiris), and a mythical dog-headed creature called a cynocephalus.
The FCC Will Finally Decide on Net Neutrality in February
After countless months of hemming and hawing, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will reportedly vote on new net neutrality rules in February. Unnamed sources at the FCC told The Washington Post as much today. Specifics remain vague, but here's hoping Tom Wheeler and friends listen to the president's advice. It's hard to tell what exactly's going to happen, though.

They Have Teasers For Teasers For Goddamn Trailers Now
Here is a teaser for the upcoming Ant-Man teaser, which I don't want to watch on principle, because FOR FUCK'S SAKE. How desperate for a goddamn Ant-Man movie do you have to be to get a boner over an ad for an ad for an ad? It's a remarkable work of corporate brainwashing that anyone could give a shit about something like this. Everyone in the universe loathes advertising EXCEPT when it comes to movie advertising.
Miracle J.J. Watt Poster Survives House Fire
This is so local news. A fire tore through one family's home in Katy, Texas, on Sunday. Everyone got out in time, although the home was seriously damaged. This is a really sad story and the KHOU report shows all the charred remains and holes in walls, but it can't help but focus on what survived: "In the middle of it all, this one poster went untouched," reporter Alice Barr says as the camera shifts down to a poster of J.J. Watt.

The Future of Women on Earth May Be Darker Than You Thought
It's easy to get caught up in the internet gender war trainwreck, where we're still arguing over whether women belong in tech or rape victims are liars. But let's set that shit aside and take the long view: Do we have any evidence that the future will bring greater freedom to women, or should we expect more dystopia? When I say freedom, I don't mean anything fancy.
