China already preparing for post-Trump era
LAST week, China accused regional US allies of feeding a "Cold War mentality" by increasingly fabricating stories of Beijing actions, dismissing a report by New Zealand that a Chinese firm had tried to install spy equipment on its soil. One thing, however, is clear: with the world preoccupied by conflicts over the Gulf and Ukraine, Beijing is pressing on with its more subtle but increasingly assertive military and wider posturing in the Pacific, particularly near its shores.
While the World Is Distracted, China Steps Up Its Strategic Game
At the start of April, an Indonesian fisherman trawling the waters of the Lombok Strait off Bali, north of Australia, found a cylindrical "torpedo -like" object in his nets bearing the name of a Chinese company. It was, maritime analysts told news outlets in Asia and Australia, almost certainly an undersea unmanned recording platform, potentially monitoring passing shipping.

At Farnborough airshow, tech and geopolitics drive aviation innovation
ON the first day of the Farnborough airshow last week, an unusual-looking craft with upward-pointing propellers along its wings rose into the sky from the main runway: the new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) lightweight "air taxi" from Britain's Vertical Aerospace. The Farnborough show and accompanying military and civilian aviation trade event have long showcased a mix of breakthroughs, breathlessly announced sales of existing aircraft types and a look into the future.

UK housebuilders have far too much power. Now a £4.5bn lawsuit could change that for good
Every new government – at least for the past decade or so – has come into office with a promise to build more homes. New ministers don a hard hat, take a trip out to a recently completed development and smile indulgently as a bright young couple get given the keys to a smart-looking new-build. Then follows a speech about aspiration. The unspoken truth will be that it is not up to the minister how many new homes are built in his or her term.
What does Andy Burnham’s council housing pledge really mean?

G7 finance chiefs seek to tackle imbalances as trade strains unity
G7 finance ministers gathering in Paris on Monday will try to find common ground on tackling global economic tensions and coordinating critical raw material supplies, even as geopolitical differences threaten to test the group's cohesion. The two-day meeting follows a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing that yielded few concrete economic breakthroughs, as tensions over Taiwan and trade simmered beneath a display of diplomatic cordiality.
