Coordinating two players in a cooking task requires a vision-language agent to track changing scene states, sequence recipe steps, and allocate shared resources under a time budget. We introduce an Overcooked-inspired benchmark for evaluating these capabilities in Unreal Engine environments constructed using coding agents.
Computer Science > Data Structures and Algorithms
We give a randomized algorithm that, for an $m\times n$ matrix whose columns have Euclidean norm at most one, finds a signing with discrepancy below $99$ in expected $\widetilde O(L_{\mathrm{in}}+n^ω)$ bit operations, where $L_{\mathrm{in}}$ is the input encoding length and $ω$ is the exponent of matrix multiplication.
Rhodes scholarships cut amid financial difficulties
The Rhodes Trust has restricted funding for professional degrees, introduced tighter limits on doctoral study, and reduced spending on events for scholars at Oxford amid financial difficulties. Scholars pursuing a Master of Public Policy, Master of Business Administration, or Master of Financial Economics will now be limited to one year of funding, preventing them from combining any of these qualifications with another degree. Rhodes recipients wishing to pursue a DPhil also face restrictions.

Attention-based rerankers score documents by aggregating query-to-document attention and subtracting a null-query calibration pass to remove positional and structural bias. Although widely used, this calibration assumes that the null pass removes irrelevant signal from each document. We show that modern prompt content, e.g.
Mechanistic machine learning for prediction of prime editing outcomes
|
Abstract Prime editing (PE) can make specific local changes to genomic DNA in living systems but its efficient application currently requires extensive optimization of PE guide RNA (pegRNA) sequences. Here we present OptiPrime, a machine learning model of PE efficiency based on current understanding of PE mechanisms. OptiPrime achieves state-of-the-art accuracy on PE efficiency prediction and enables prediction of nicking guide RNA (PE3) and dual pegRNA (twinPE) outcomes.

New Jersey Makes Data Brokers Pay for Collecting Your Information
The digital economy relies heavily on collecting personal data. This requires new tools to regulate the practice and new methods to compensate states when companies collect their residents’ data. Companies popularly known as “data brokers” operate invisibly, collecting and buying consumer data and then aggregating and selling it to advertisers and merchants.
If You Think You Can Do Real-World Text-to-SQL
Data warehouses are often subject to a preponderance of ad-hoc queries. They came into existence in the 1990s to support historical data stores of customer-facing data, especially sales data. At that time, it was widely reported that they paid for themselves based on better stock rotation in less than six months.
A Solid First Budget, but New Jersey Still Needs Revenue That Lasts
Gov. Sherrill’s first budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 largely followed through on the promises made in her original address, focusing on reducing the deficit while preserving family affordability. But a closer look shows that robust revenues and reforms are needed to put the state on more stable fiscal footing. Even bigger changes will be needed in FY 2028 to meet the governor’s promise to eliminate the deficit entirely and make the state more affordable for its residents.
How Layout Decisions Shape Attendee Flow in Live Event Environments
When people talk about event success, they usually focus on what is easiest to see first. The branding is strong. The space looks polished. The colors work. The lighting feels right. The installation photographs well. All of that matters. But once attendees actually enter the environment, a different set of questions starts to decide whether the space works.

Cutting Off Data Center Subsidies Is the Right Move for New Jersey
New Jersey should never have been in the business of subsidizing data centers, which have increased utility rates and imposed costs on communities up and down the state. NJPP thanks the bill sponsors and legislative leadership for the proposal in A5165 to end the brief, costly Next New Jersey AI tax credit. But this change comes too late for the $250 million already lost to this program, sending taxpayer dollars to subsidize the industry causing cost increases and straining state infrastructure.
A Smarter Stay NJ: The Governor’s Changes Are a Good Start
Every senior in New Jersey deserves to grow old in their own home, with the stability and dignity that comes with it. And when the state spends public dollars to make that possible, those dollars should reach the people who need help the most, not the households that need it least. Stay NJ, the state’s newest property tax rebate program, was not built that way.

Lossmaxxing: Time To Crack Down on Paper Losses and Restore Corporate Tax Accountability
A fair corporate tax system tracks corporate profits: when business booms, companies pay more; when business slumps, they pay less. Companies generating more profits should pay more in taxes to reflect their relative wealth. The “net-operating-loss” (NOL) deduction originated from this principle of tax equity. It allows companies to reduce their taxable profits by offsetting them with losses from earlier years.
Progressive Tax Gains Help, But New Jersey Budget Shortfall Remains
On May 19, the New Jersey State Treasurer reported revenues slightly above projections, revising budget forecasts for the upcoming fiscal year and increasing the state’s projected cash reserves. A structural deficit of more than $1 billion remains, signaling a continued gap between the investments the state has promised and the revenue available to fund them. In response, New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP) releases the following statement.
Not As Easy As ABC: How NJ Can Recover More Than $120 Million From a Tax Break for the Wealthy
New Jersey’s Alternative Business Calculation (ABC) has drifted from its original purpose: closing a gap in the tax code for individuals with business income.
A Wealth of Revenue: How Taxing Wealth Proceeds Can Help Balance New Jersey’s Budget
Adopting a wealth proceeds tax based on federal law could raise more than $1.1 billion to help balance New Jersey’s state budget, while affecting only a small share of the state’s wealthiest households. New Jersey policymakers could direct those funds toward education, health care, and other investments families need.
Who Pays for a Per-Employee Medicaid Fee?
A fee tied to individual employees’ health coverage will encourage employers to find loopholes and harm workers. That’s the core problem with Governor Mikie Sherrill’s proposal to charge large employers based on how many of their workers are enrolled in NJ FamilyCare, the state’s Medicaid program. In her first state budget address, Gov. Sherrill proposed collecting fees from employers who have 50 or more workers with Medicaid coverage.

What to Look for in the New Jersey Budget for Fiscal Year 2027
As Governor Mikie Sherrill prepares her first budget, New Jersey faces economic and budgetary headwinds, including: increased costs for housing, utilities, and health care for residents, instability and costs shifting from the federal government, and cost pressures on government services, notably employee health care costs.[i] New Jersey continues to face significant economic challenges.
Opening the Door to Opportunity with Family Tax Credits
Thousands more New Jersey families could afford child care, groceries, and rent if state lawmakers expand two proven tax credits: the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Governor Sherrill opened her governorship with a call to keep “the door to opportunity open” for New Jersey families.
Ruth Chang: 'If we keep going down this road, we are definitely going to get AI misalignment'
How do we make hard choices? Not the choices which are hard for us to make - because the right choice is psychologically difficult - not choices between options which we have incomplete information about, or choices that are incomparable. No. Hard choices are decisions between options neither of which is better, nor are they equally good. Let's say, should I become a commercial lawyer or a philosopher? These options - in the words of Professor Ruth Chang - are on a par.
Phosphoramidate and Silyl Amine Mediated Synthesis of Isocyanide Cyclopentadienone Iron Complexes
1 Introduction In 2023, our group reported the first instance of introducing isocyanide ligands into the cyclopentadienone iron complex framework by blue light induced exchange of CO with CNR yielding cyclopentadienone triisocyanide iron complexes (see Scheme 1) [1].
Five Budget Time Bombs Facing the Next Governor
Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill is going to inherit a budget full of hidden dangers. On the surface, the state’s finances appear healthy: historic cash reserves, an improved credit rating, and on-target revenues.
New Jersey Should Reject Unjustified Giveaways to Sports Teams and Big Business
The continued expansion of corporate tax credits to induce economic development has yet to fully deliver on its promise. And yet, this bill proposes to send good money after bad, authorizing billions of state tax dollars to go towards private businesses and billionaires.
'We're all mad here': Alice in Won-DRE-Land at Tingewick 2025
When I wandered into Tingewick Hall on a cold, dark evening in seventh week, I was utterly unprepared for the madness that awaited me over the next three and a half hours. By the time I walked out of the John Radcliffe I had - both literally and figuratively - been transformed: armed with more insider hospital jokes and medical puns than I ever thought possible, and faced with the frankly impossible task of reviewing a pantomime whose absurdity could justify its own book.
International student fees increased by 37% since 2022
Overseas student fees have increased more than 37% over the last three years, a Cherwell investigation has found. BA Biomedical Sciences and BA Psychology have seen the biggest increase at 69% and 67% respectively. But even those rises do not make them the priciest degrees. In the Sciences Division, most degrees now charge £59,260 per year as of 2025/26 for overseas undergraduates, compared with the £9,535 cap for home students.

Gutted: New Jersey’s Shrinking Public Workforce
New Jersey has cut its state workforce by more than 25 percent since 2006, eliminating nearly 20,000 positions even as the state’s population has grown.[1] This can have concrete consequences for New Jersey residents, including longer wait times at government offices, delayed benefits, fewer inspectors for nursing homes and polluting factories, and less oversight of how schools and local governments spend public dollars.
Police ban Oxford asylum hotel protest under public order act
Thames Valley Police (TVP) has banned a planned anti-immigration protest and counter protest due to take place tomorrow at an Oxford hotel which houses asylum seekers due to a football match taking place nearby. Cherwell understands that an anti-immigration protest was planned outside the Holiday Inn Express hotel near Kassam stadium, and that a counterprotest by local community groups was planned for 12:30pm.The hotel houses asylum seekers, most of whom are believed to be male.

Freedom from Want: An Economic Guarantee for New Jersey's Kids
All children in New Jersey deserve the freedom to grow up safe, healthy, and free from poverty. Childhood poverty hurts school performance and growth today, while damaging mental and physical health and earning power for a lifetime. Research is clear: childhood poverty causes lasting harm.
Protests outside Oxford asylum hotel as campaigners call for unity and compassion
Around 50 protesters from Stand Up to Racism (SUTR) and other local groups gathered yesterday outside a Holiday Inn Express near the Kassam Stadium to oppose a smaller anti-immigration demonstration. The counter-protesters rallied in support of the asylum seekers currently housed at the hotel by the Home Office. Section 95 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 allows the Home Secretary to provide accommodation and support to migrants who are destitute.
The promise and peril of comparing fluorescence lifetime in biology revealed by simulations
eLife Assessment This study presents an important computational framework, FLiSimBA (Fluorescence Lifetime Simulation for Biological Applications), for modeling experimental limitations in Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM). FLiSimBA is readily available in MATLAB and Python, enables users to simulate effects of noise and varying sensor expression levels, and provides practical guidance for both lifetime imaging experiments and biosensor development.

The patient, a 79-year-old man, presented with acute-onset fever, bilateral anterior nodular scleritis, and a pustular skin rash. He had been diagnosed with vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic syndrome (VEXAS) eight months earlier, with concomitant myelodysplastic syndrome. He was initially treated with prednisone and tocilizumab, with ruxolitinib introduced five months prior.
The just will live by faith: Clint Eastwood’s ‘Juror #2’
Clint Eastwood’s final film pits a self-incriminating juror against a justice system that confuses verdicts for virtue. Witches can be right, Giants can be good. You decide what’s right You decide what’s good. Just remember: Someone is on your side Someone else is not. -Stephen Sondheim, Into the Woods (1986) Imagine you’re sitting on a jury for a murder case. Halfway through the trial, you slowly realise that you’re the one that’s done it. What do you do?
Students frustrated over filming at Brasenose College during exam season
Students at Brasenose College expressed their frustration last week after scenes for a forthcoming sequel to My Fault: London were shot on the College's grounds. At the time of filming some students were still sitting their preliminary exams. Filming began on Monday 23rd June, with production crews descending on key locations including the Old Quad, Porters' Lodge, and Brasenose Hall. The film crew occupied the college Tuesday 24th June, with the Hall closed for filming between 7.30am and 11.30am.
Rush to Expand Film Tax Credits Leaves Average New Jerseyans Behind
Today the state legislature voted to approve a bill (A5827/S4618) that would continue expanding the New Jersey film and digital media tax credit. This program provides subsidies directly to film studios to make movies and television programs in New Jersey, covering up to nearly half their costs. The bill would increase credit amounts for certain projects and loosen accountability requirements.
Raising Revenue from Expensive Property Sales Will Help Make Housing More Affordable for All
On June 26, 2025, the Senate and Assembly budget committees approved an expansion of the realty transfer fee on property transactions over $2 million in value (A5804/S4666). Currently, property sales that are $1 million or more are charged a fee of one percent of the total sale price. This bill would increase that amount to 2% for sales over $2 million, with the percentage increasing with each $500,000 in sale price, up to 3.5% for sales over $3.5 million.
Chen: Best Defense Against Federal Chaos? A Bigger Savings Account
OPINION New Jerseyans are facing significant threats from Washington, including a far-reaching congressional tax plan that benefits the wealthiest to pay for massive cuts to health insurance and food assistance for millions of Americans. These cuts couldn’t come at a worse time for working families, as economists predict a recession and inflation triggered by high and volatile tariffs. Meanwhile, federal funding freezes have hurt nonprofits, colleges, and religious organizations.
Course Correction: Preserving Senior Housing Affordability While Cutting Costs
Every New Jerseyan deserves to age with dignity, stability, and the ability to remain in their community — no matter their income or housing status. The state has a responsibility to ensure that people aged 65 and over on fixed incomes aren’t pushed out of their homes simply because they can’t afford their housing costs. At the same time, New Jersey must steward its public dollars wisely, prioritizing investments that advance equity and support those most in need.
Crocodile Tears - 'Techno-futuristic, but why?' - Cherwell
There is a lot to like about Natascha Norton's Crocodile Tears. Female lead Elektra Voulgari Cleare is both electric and effortlessly elegant, and male lead Flynn Ivo delivers a gripping performance that is both emphatic and earnest. I was particularly moved by the opening scene (on screen), where the chemistry between the actors felt piercing and palpable.
The promise and peril of comparing fluorescence lifetime in biology revealed by simulations
Abstract Signaling dynamics are crucial in biological systems, and biosensor-based real-time imaging has revolutionized their analysis. Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) excels over the widely used fluorescence intensity imaging by allowing the measurement of absolute signal levels, independent of sensor concentration. This capability enables the comparison of signaling dynamics across different animals, body regions, and timeframes.
Review: The Great Gatsby
Sophia Eiden's production of Simon Levy's script of The Great Gatsby is an undoubted triumph. I was, if only for a moment, transported back to the Roaring Twenties; to a bygone era of excess, extravagance, and endless exhilaration. The setting of Trinity College gardens only heightened this sense of temporal dislocation. One could easily imagine such scenes playing out there a century ago.
House Tax Plan Would Strip Child Tax Credit from 180,000 New Jersey Children, NJPP Warns
On Wednesday May 13, the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee voted to approve tax proposals in the congressional reconciliation bill. One proposed change would deny the Child Tax Credit to children who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents if either parent claiming them on their tax return lacks a Social Security Number — even if the child is fully eligible under current law. In response, New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP) issues the following statement.
Progressive Tax Gains Help, But New Jersey Budget Shortfall Remains
On May 14, the New Jersey State Treasurer reported higher-than-expected revenues, revising the budget projections for the upcoming fiscal year and increasing the state’s projected cash reserves. While the higher than expected tax returns and upward revisions in revenues are a welcome development, the increase is not enough to eliminate the state’s underlying structural deficit, which remains close to $1 billion even after the governor’s proposed revenue increases and spending reductions.
End the sub-minimum wage for tipped work
All workers in New Jersey should be able to live, raise a family, and afford the essentials. This is the idea behind a minimum wage – to ensure that all workers, even if businesses would rather pay them less, can meet a minimum standard of living. However, in New Jersey tipped workers such as bartenders and servers can be paid as little as $5.62 an hour, well below the minimum wage of $15.49 for most workers.
Review of 'Intermezzo': Chess, law, and the philosophy of language in yet another Rooney masterpiece
I thought it perplexing that critics felt Intermezzo similar to other works by writer Sally Rooney. Certainly, it shares some familiar ingredients: it’s set (mostly) in Dublin, explores personal relationships, and the characters seem to have perpetually miserable lives. Yet the resemblance stops there. Rooney’s new book is a bold exploration of love and grief, and an exposition of how not all of life’s problems can be solved by logic and intelligence.

'I now live in constant fear' – UN judge convicted of enslaving woman jailed for six years - Cherwell
Lydia Mugambe, a UN judge convicted of keeping a woman as a slave in her home in Oxford whilst she was studying for a DPhil in law at Pembroke College, was sentenced to six years and four months imprisonment at the Oxford Crown Court on 2nd May. In March of this year, a jury found that the victim cooked, cleaned, and cared for Mugambe’s children from 6am to 10pm for no compensation, whilst the UN judge kept her passport and travel documents from her.
