Since I joined Instagram in 2023, I’ve made a lot of posts about Providence. I’ve shared photos of Waterfire, Roger Williams Park, Blackstone Boulevard, Swan Point Cemetery, the State House, the pedestrian bridge, frozen lemonade trucks…the list goes on. I don’t have a particularly large following, so the response to these posts is usually modest. A few dozen “likes.” An occasional share or comment. Every now and then, I get a new follower. A Tribute to Penny, Providence’s Beloved Bookstore Cat.

Providence lost a very special creature recently. Her name was Penny, and she was the cat who lived at Heartleaf Books, the cozy, cooperatively-run bookstore on Atwells Ave. Some of the details of Penny’s life are unknown. The co-founders of Heartleaf, Caroline and Mads Vericker, didn’t know exactly what kind of a cat she was. They suspected she may have been part Russian Blue. In the announcement of her passing, the store said it didn’t know Penny’s exact age, either.
