The glycolytic enzyme PGAM1 functions as a metabolic–autophagy checkpoint to coordinate growth and stress tolerance
Abstract Cell survival requires tight coordination between growth-promoting metabolism and cellular quality-control pathways, yet how these processes are integrated remains unclear. Here we identify the conserved glycolytic enzyme PGAM1 as a metabolic-autophagy checkpoint that links glycolysis to autophagy initiation independently of its catalytic activity.

Abstract Click to copy section linkSection link copied! The functional state of subcellular organelles served as a fundamental indicator of the cellular health. However, conventional fluorescent probes were largely limited to single-parameter detection, failing to capture coordinated interorganellar dynamics during pathological processes. Here, we developed a novel fluorescent probe, QTNP, based on a quinolinethiazolium scaffold.
Genetic basis of the circle of Willis characteristics in the healthy and intracranial aneurysm population
Abstract Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm (IA) can result in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (ASAH), a severe and often fatal form of stroke. The configuration of the intracranial arteries – collectively known as the circle of Willis (CoW) – influences the risk of IA development and rupture. Although CoW variation is known to be heritable, its genetic underpinnings and contribution to IA remain poorly understood.

1 Introduction Known as the Earth's ‘Third Pole’, the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has an average altitude of over 4000 m. Thousands of Tibetan lakes are important components of the Asian Water Tower, sustaining the hydrological cycle in the high-altitude areas (Immerzeel et al. 2020; Yao et al. 2022). Recently, the TP is warming at nearly twice the global average rate, which has caused a series of lake-watershed hydrological changes.
Individual differences in prefrontal coding of visual features
Abstract Each of us perceives the world differently. What may underlie such individual differences in perception? Here, we characterize the lateral prefrontal cortex's role in vision using computational models, with a specific focus on individual differences. Using a 7T fMRI dataset, we found that encoding models relating visual features extracted from a deep neural network to brain responses to natural images robustly predict responses in patches of LPFC.

Bottom-up and top-down processes influence contemporary patterns of mammal species richness in Australia's monsoonal tropics
Australia is one of the Earth's ‘megadiverse’ countries (Mittermeier et al., 1997). The significance of its biodiversity is partly due to the continent's rich endemic mammal fauna (Woinarski et al., 2015). However, since European colonisation 230 years ago, there has been an exceptional rate of extinction of Australia's mammals (Woinarski et al., 2015).
Representation of visual uniformity in the lateral prefrontal cortex
Abstract Visual illusions tend to have early visual cortical correlates. However, this general trend may not apply to our subjective impression of a detailed and uniform visual world, which may be considered illusory given the paucity of peripheral processing.

Images with harder-to-reconstruct visual representations leave stronger memory traces - Nature Human Behaviour
Abstract Much of what we remember is not because of intentional selection, but simply a by-product of perceiving. This raises a foundational question about the architecture of the mind: how does perception interface with and influence memory?
Individual differences in prefrontal coding of visual features
Abstract The lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) is commonly associated with high-level cognition, such as attention, language and cognitive control. However, recent work has demonstrated that it is also critical for basic perceptual functions including object recognition. Here we characterize the role of LPFC in visual processing with computational models.
An AI-informed NMR structure reveals a LETM1 F-EF-hand for two-way mitochondrial calcium regulation.
Abstract AlphaFold2 can accurately predict high-resolution protein structure from sequence but does not account for solvent conditions, ligands, post-translational modifications, lowly populated states or rare folds. Human leucine zipper EF-hand transmembrane protein-1 (LETM1) has one sequence-identifiable EF-hand but whether and how calcium (Ca2+) binding affects structure and function remains enigmatic.

Crystal Structure and NMR of an α,δ‐Peptide Foldamer Helix Shows Side‐Chains are Well Placed for Bifunctional Catalysis: Application as a Minimalist Aldolase Mimic
Graphical Abstract A helical catalyst that is constructed from α- and δ-amino acids: In their Research Article (e202305326), Alexander J. A. Cobb et al. present a foldamer helix whereby the catalytic functionalities are positioned in such a way that they can be exploited for bifunctional catalysis. The stability of the helix and the modularity of the system (represented by the jigsaw pieces) means that different α-amino acids can be used whilst maintaining the same helix type.
Cyclic mechanical stretch pre‐stimulated bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells promote the healing of infected bone defect in a mouse model
Abstract Cyclic mechanical stretch (CMS) is an effective method to accelerate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiation. Here, we investigated CMS pre-stimulated bone marrow MSCs (CMS-BMSCs), characterized and evaluated the therapeutic potential of CMS-BMSCs on the treatment of infected bone defect in mouse model. BMSCs were obtained from C57BL/6J mice and then subjected to CMS.
Crystal Structure and NMR of an α,δ‐Peptide Foldamer Helix Shows Side‐Chains are Well Placed for Bifunctional Catalysis: Application as a Minimalist Aldolase Mimic**
Results and Discussion To assess our hypothesis, we first needed to identify a δ-residue that would be capable of adopting the required conformation to form this predicted 13/11-helix. According to our minimization studies, we felt that cyclic δ-residue 1 (Figure 2) would satisfy these conditions (See Supporting Information, Section 4.1).
