Food-related energy consumption can help reveal poverty in rural Chinese households
Abstract Energy consumption for cooking is important for satisfying basic needs, complementing traditional poverty measurements. Here, we propose an energy consumption-based indicator (Energy Engel Coefficient) that measures the proportion of household energy dedicated to food preparation activities relative to the total. Using a nation-wide household survey in China, we find that this indicator exhibits consistent patterns with regional and household characteristics.

Novel variants in LINC and TTM complexes of meiotic chromosome dynamics are associated with meiotic arrest and non-obstructive azoospermia
Abstract Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) represents the most severe type of male infertility. The linker of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complex and the TERB1–TERB2–MAJIN (TTM) telomere-tethering complex are essential for meiotic chromosome dynamics; however, pathogenic variants in these pathways have rarely been characterized in human NOA.
XPF-like domain in human SHOC1 is required for crossover formation and protecting autosome from MSUC
During meiosis, ZMM proteins play essential roles in stabilizing the recombination intermediates and promoting crossover (CO) formation. In mice, shortage in chiasmata 1 (SHOC1) forms a trimeric complex with the other two ZMM proteins, SPO16 and TEX11, to bind recombination intermediates after strand invasion. Although genetic variants of SHOC1 are clinically associated with male infertility, their conserved functions in human gametogenesis remain enigmatic.
A generalized deep learning framework for automated marine oil spill detection using multi-source SAR cross-sea datasets
Abstract Marine oil spill detection using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery remains challenging due to complex sea-surface scattering mechanisms and interference from look-alike phenomena, which limit the generalization capability of deep learning models across different marine environments. To address this challenge, this study develops a multi-source remote sensing deep learning framework for automated oil spill detection based on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery.
Evolution and future trend of household carbon footprints in aging Japan

Multimodal large language models, street view images and urban policy-intelligence: recovering the sustainability effects of redlining
Abstract Using Google Street View imagery, we explore the capabilities of a multimodal large language model and semantic segmentation to construct neighborhood measures that accurately: (i) identify the co-location of sustainability deficits; and (ii) recover effects of place-based interventions. We derive poverty and tree canopy measures using GPT-4o in a reason-then-estimate pipeline, and a conventional semantic-segmentation model, comparing both to authoritative benchmarks.

Allosteric activation of the glutamate receptor mGlu2 by the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A - Nature Communications
Abstract G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) dimers and higher-order oligomers are the subject of intense debates. The complexes formed between two or more different GPCRs enable the cell to integrate several signals. But the mechanisms of the allosteric interaction within these oligomers remain unclear. Here, we use as a model the heteromer formed in the brain between two targets of anti-psychotic drugs, the metabotropic glutamate receptor 2 (mGlu2) and the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A.

A Flexible Hybrid Quantum-classical Training Framework of Organ-at-Risk and Tumor Segmentation Models for Radiation Therapy Planning - Scientific Reports
Abstract Deep learning-based Organ-at-Risk (OAR) and tumor segmentation is vital for radiation therapy planning but often suffers from over-parameterization, requiring large datasets to avoid overfitting, which is impractical in small-sample medical settings. Traditional trainable parameter reduction methods, relying on structural lightweighting or low-rank approximation, may artificially limit model expressiveness and hurt performance.
Electrosynthesis of ethylene from syngas - Nature Sustainability
Abstract The electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction (COR) reaction offers a carbon- and energy-efficient pathway to ethylene. However, present systems typically rely on pure CO, making the process costly and difficult to scale. An economically feasible alternative is to use syngas—the predominant industrial CO source—produced globally at quantities approximately 250 times higher than pure CO, but containing hydrogen and other components.
