Best Buy’s Richfield headquarters value has fallen sharply, raising new questions about what it could mean for city tax revenue and homeowners. The city and Best Buy had a roughly 25-year agreement that set a minimum taxable value of $118.5 million for the campus. Richfield City Council member Sean Hayford Oleary said the city helped pay for the campus and infrastructure tied to it, and that value ensured Best Buy would help cover the cost of those loans.

Residents want answers after $11M+ in tax money didn’t fix conditions at their Minneapolis apartment complex

More than $10 million in public money went to improve conditions at Heritage Park apartments, but a couple of hundred mixed-income units at the Near North Minneapolis complex continue to sit vacant or unsafe to live in. Between 2022 and 2024, the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) passed along $11.3 million to Heritage Park, in part to ensure units were livable. In that same period, the city invested $875,000 toward repairs.

Best Buy HQ assessed value nearly halves, shifting tax burden in Richfield, city officials warn

The City of Richfield is warning that a sharp drop in the Best Buy Headquarters assessed value could shift more of the city’s tax burden onto other property owners. As Richfield plans its 2027 budget, the city said Hennepin County’s new assessed value for the Best Buy corporate campus fell from roughly $63 million to $32 million in one year. The city said that means a 5% drop in its commercial tax base for taxes due next year.
