When a group of starving fox squirrels begs him to share his hoard of food, animosity erupts into a ferocious war.

Allegorical squabbles in 'The Squirrels' at Maryland Ensemble Theater
The fun is in the physical acting. The six actors in Robert Askins’ The Squirrels at Maryland Ensemble Theater (MET) run, jump, chase, paw, gnaw, “muck,” and fight with abandon, all the while chittering, squeaking, arguing, and deceiving. Squirrels gone wild! The energy is electric. Costume designer Cody Gilliam gives the actors not only their expressive bushy tails but color-coded outfits to represent their membership in one of the play’s two contending clans: red squirrels and gray squirrels.

The Year in Theater, Part 1
Photo: Evan Michael Woods An Octoroon at Stage West In looking back at the year in Dallas-Fort Worth theater, two intersectional themes stand out: representation for voices from diverse and underrepresented communities, and the growth of women’s voices. Neither is a new discussion, but in 2018 we saw bigger strides than we have before. Unfortunately, it’s a situation of two stage-crosses forward, one stage-cross back. There is still much work to be done.

'Hand to God' keeps the shocks coming in San Jose
Puppets talking back to their puppeteers and saying all kinds of rude things have been a staple of ventriloquist acts as long as anyone can remember, so it’s no surprise that puppets that run amok and rebel against or control their puppeteers have become a recurring horror trope over the years.

Addison's WaterTower Theatre Announces 2017-2018 Season Full of Premieres
Addison doesn't have many things in common with Chicago, but now it has at least one: Joanie Schultz. The new artistic director of WaterTower Theatre spent 20 years in the Windy City earning her master's and a reputation for producing edgy new work. Now she's bringing a Chicago theater mentality to Addison. Schultz characterizes Chicago actors and directors as fierce, if sometimes sycophantic. This makes for theater in which the audience can’t help getting swept up.
'Hand to God' at PTC: A lesson in puppeteering
OK, which are creepier: clowns or sock puppets? Actually, I have never suffered from either coulrophobia (clowns) or pupaphobia (guess). But after watching a puppeteering class for the upcoming production of Hand to God at the Philadelphia Theatre Company (March 31-April 30), I realize that, in the hands of a skilled actor, a puppet can … well, it’s scary. The class took place at the Mask & Wig Club on S. Quince Street.
'Hand to God' devilishly funny in Berkeley
Beware the wrath of Tyrone. He may be a wee bit of gray sock with bright orange fringe otherwise known as a hand puppet, but he’s also a manifestation of the Devil (maybe), and he’s got vengeance on his mind in the offbeat gem “Hand to God.” Peninsula Things To Do, Feb.
