Managing water and wastewater is a challenge for the growing City of Riceboro, and it’s an example of what’s facing Liberty County’s cities and other entities. County planners are in the early stages of assessing whether to consolidate some or all of those required systems for the sake of growth. Riceboro ran afoul of state and federal regulations over serial violations at its outdated sewer treatment system.

Liberty County commissioners pass $71 million budget

An otherwise routine annual budget approval turned into a debate over whether Liberty County spends enough on youth programs. The Liberty County Board of Commissioners voted 6 to 1 to pass a proposed $71 million budget at its Thursday, June 18 meeting. That’s an increase of $5.6 million – or 8.6% – over fiscal year 2026. This year’s budget includes a 4.05% increase in the General Fund, with expected costs of about $5.5 million per month to run the county.

Liberty County Development Authority to seek more data on local rivers

The Liberty County Development Authority voted Monday to seek additional testing for both the Laurel View and North Newport Rivers as possible discharge sites for the county’s planned new wastewater treatment plant. The decision comes after a June 9 standing-room-only public meeting about the Laurel View plant and heated discussions about how to handle any leftover treated wastewater that would not be reused for irrigation and cooling.
