‘We’re family’: Alumni of historical Dogan Elementary School in Marshall unite for inaugural reunion - Marshall News Messenger

More than four decades after its doors closed, the spirit of the historical Dogan Elementary School came alive Saturday as alumni gathered for their inaugural reunion. “I must say that we are the envy of all other elementary schools,” committee member Sythia Gaut said, noting the reunion was the first of its kind to unite all alumni of the school that served Black students in Marshall. Gaut said she was too excited to sleep the previous night as she anticipated the reunion.

Dogan Elementary School alumni set memorial reunion today - Marshall News Messenger

Following this past month’s demolition of the M.W. Dogan Elementary School building in Marshall, alumni are rallying June 27 for a special memorial campus gathering. The event is set from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the site of the former campus, 2007 Dogan St. With the theme, “The Way We Were,” the gathering will serve as a special reunion for the classes of 1948 to 1981.

Marshall’s Paulene Hopkins honored for WWII service in ‘Six Triple Eight’ battalion  - Marshall News Messenger

As the old adage says, behind every great man is a great woman. Dr. Paulene Lewis Hopkins, wife of Marshall Tuskegee Airman Mack Hopkins, carved out her own military legacy during World War II as a member of The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion – also known as the Six Triple Eight. It was a predominantly-Black battalion of the U.S. Women’s Army Corps that managed postal services.
