On bank holiday Sunday, 20th August, there will be no direct London North Eastern Railway (LNER) services between Peterborough and London King’s Cross. Electron tomography reveals mitochondrial network and cristae remodelling during cell differentiation in the human placenta
Abstract Mitochondria adapt their structure through fusion and fission, yet how their morphology and cristae architecture change as cells differentiate remains unclear. The human placenta is a valuable model for studying mitochondrial diversity within a single tissue. As epithelial trophoblast cells of the placenta differentiate, their accompanying mitochondria morphologically and functionally transform. We use array tomography to characterise mitochondrial volume and network complexity.

The high cost of low taxes | Roger S. Smith
Those who benefit most from lower taxes devote vast resources to fund think tanks, lobbyists and media to advocate for small government and low taxes. It is up to the rest of us to call out the “high cost” of small(er) government. Although U.S. wealth is exceptional, insufficient investment in public services means our health, educational attainment, and happiness are not. kAm|@?6J E2=<D 6G6?

The Man of a Thousand Voices
And His Escape into Idaho’s Night By Roger Craig Smith I’m a grown man, standing alone in a padded basement room in Boise, intentionally making animal noises and replicating bodily function sounds using only my voice, because the people I hear inside my head are mandating that I do so…and I have to do what the voices tell me, because they’re paying me. It’s a Tuesday. This is all very normal, I assure you.
Book Review: Express Diesel Trains by George Woods
Express Diesel Trains by George Woods describes the evolution of Britain’s high-speed trains from 1968, when a prototype of the familiar Class 43 HST was developed. They attained speeds never imagined in steam days, with 125 mph an everyday occurrence. Later came the Class 180 Adelantes, the Class 220/221 Voyagers, and the latest Azuma trains, which are increasingly monopolising long-distance travel in the UK.

'We need some light in the darkness' Labour’s Leadership – a grassroots view - LabourList
I write as chair of a Labour party ward in North London. Here, we face opposition from Greens (thin but threatening), Liberal Democrats (nominal) and supporters of Jeremy Corbyn (vanishing). Reform is a distant, if unpleasant, rumble. Not so, of course, nationally. Let’s face some unpalatable facts. On our doorsteps, voters are uninspired by the current government. Keir is unpopular. He is seen as robotic, vacillating and out of touch. He is very close to losing the electorate’s attention.

Zoé Basha Releases Debut Album ‘Gamble’
French-American musician, composer, and carpenter Zoé Basha, based in Dublin, Ireland has released her long-awaited debut solo album Gamble. And completing this stellar ensemble, none other than Johan Gielen, donning his Airscape cape to deliver a spellbinding rework of the duo’s ‘When My Angel Sleeps’.

It’s a wrap! My view of this year’s BEVA Congress
“We desperately need to encourage more veterinary students to consider going into equine practice, and so it was great to meet such an enthusiastic bunch, who are passionate about our branch of the profession” The lead-up to any big event for which you feel responsible is always stressful, but I should never have worried! The team at BEVA is so used to running our congress year after year that they are like a well-oiled machine.

The first U.S. President, George Washington, was born 292 years ago on Feb. 22, 1732. His concern about the divisive and destructive nature of party politics and his foresight regarding the shortcomings of “democracy” with “majority rule” are clear in his 1796 letter to John Jay, fellow founding father and the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court.
