Only 23 found: New plant species discovered in Assam’s Rani

Ophiorrhiza assamensis Guwahati: A plant found during a field survey in Assam’s Rani area has been identified as a new species, adding to the state’s documented plant diversity. Named Ophiorrhiza assamensis, the species was found along the Sajjanpara-Satargaon Road in Kamrup Metropolitan district. Researchers Selim Mehmud and Birina Bhuyan have described the species in the latest issue of Phytotaxa. The plant was first collected on June 22, 2024, at an elevation of about 148 metres.

Northeast’s cultural treasures feature in President’s gift auction

Guwahati: Cultural artefacts from Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura feature among the highlights of the third edition of E-Upahaar, the online auction of gifts presented to the President during official engagements. Organised by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the auction is underway and will conclude on September 4. According to the catalogue, the initiative seeks to turn ceremonial gifts into instruments of social welfare, with proceeds supporting various welfare initiatives.
