Ancient Rome: How Caligula went from being a beloved ruler to one of the most cruel emperors
Caligula proved a popular choice as emperor, both in Rome and in the provinces. He was not only the son of Germanicus but also the grandson, on his mother’s side, of Marcus Agrippa, and the great-grandson of both Augustus and Mark Antony. Although without meaningful military experience, he was popular with the Roman troops: many fondly remembered the pint-sized, uniformed child who, from the age of two, had served as a mascot on his father’s campaigns against the Germans.
The future of science is automation
Thanks to the widespread availability of food and medical care, the ability to travel, and many other scientific and technological developments, billions of people today are living better lives than kings of centuries past. It is deeply surprising to me how little appreciated this astonishing fact is. Of course, despite all the progress we’ve made, the world faces many challenges in the 21st century: climate change, pandemics, poverty and cancer, to name just a few.
The Shortest History of Italy by Ross King
'Italian history has always been about resilience and rebirth ... It is a country that for so many centuries has offered up visions of the wonders to which we humans, at our very best, can aspire.' Italy was the centre of Europe's first worldwide empire and the home of the Renaissance. Its political and cultural influences have encircled the globe. Today it is the fifth most visited country in the world. With a population of 60 million, it welcomes, each year, almost double that number of tourists.
Review | NetGalley
The third book in this Hollywood series is aptly named. Davey, Mirren and Zandas' lives are full of drama. This story explores contemporary themes through its characters, and it's an emotional read. I cared about the main characters and was immersed in their lives, which is addictive reading. As their lives change, the main protagonists undergo significant character development, making them believable and drawing the reader's sympathy.

Story of a space
Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Pinterest Space. A space is called by different names, an auditorium, a garden, a room, a closet. Space, the one where you are standing or sitting right now and reading this, has a name you call it, has memories of someone you know, or stranger you don’t know, or maybe yourself. Otherwise, It is about to create some in the future. A space has stories, and Architecture is the language in which you hear them more distinctly.
BlogTour for The Catch by Authors Shari Low and Ross King
My Review: Another great book by the dynamic duo Shari Low and Ross King, Each chapter has its dedicated song, and the story follows 4 character perspectives. Mirren, Davie, Zander and Sandra. The 3 childhood friends who grew up on a Glaswegian Council Estate made their successes and lives in Hollywood. Sandra is a reporter who can either keep a secret or tell it. The humour in this book had me laughing out loud and some scenarios you can imagine really happening in Hollywood.

Goatskin, Tree Bark, and One Expensive Scribe: How “The King of the World’s Booksellers” Produced Manuscripts
Producing new manuscripts of Cicero’s writings in the middle of the 15th century was clearly a more laborious and involved enterprise than combing the sleepy shelves of Franciscan libraries for neglected codices. The word “manuscript” comes from the Latin manu scriptus, “written by hand,” but any manuscript was the product of much more work than simply the writing of a single hand.

Review: 'The Bookseller of Florence,' by Ross King
Americans bought more than 750 million physical books in 2020, most of which, due to the pandemic, likely shipped direct to buyers. Hundreds of millions of e-books and audiobooks were also bought or borrowed and delivered instantly. And online preservation efforts mean millions more titles are already on the internet. While the publishing industry faces undeniable challenges, it's never been easier for book lovers to acquire books. But 'twas not ever thus.
The Bookseller of Florence: The Story of the Manuscripts That Illuminated the Renaissance
The fascinating account of a 15th-century bibliophile who revered hand-lettered tomes. The bookseller of the title of this fine work is Vespasiano da Bisticci, a once-prominent purveyor and producer of handwritten, handbound volumes who held forth in his shop on the Via dei Librai (the Street of Booksellers) in 15th-century Florence.
The Golden Age of Florence (podcast)
Even in their own time the people of fifteenth-century Florence realised that they were living in a ‘Golden Age.’ In this episode we travel back to 1434 to meet a character who was at once fascinating and ubiquitous: the fabled ‘Bookseller of Florence’, Vespasiano da Bisticci *** [About our format] *** In February 1434, a young boy made his way over the Ponte Veccio, bridge that spans the River Arno in Florence.
Caravaggio
In the tradition of John Richardson's Picasso, a commanding new biography of the Italian master's tumultuous life and mysterious death. For four hundred years Caravaggio's (1571-1610) staggering artistic achievements have thrilled viewers, yet his volatile personal trajectory - the murder of Ranuccio Tomasini, the doubt surrounding Caravaggio's sexuality, the chain of events that began with his imprisonment on Malta and ended with his premature death - has long confounded historians.
L’artista degli investimenti

Spring Books 2021
01. Spring Books 2021: Biographical On Love and Tyranny: The Life and Politics of Hannah Arendt Ann Heberlein A slim volume on life and thought of one of the most influential political theorists of the 20th century. STEMming the Leak
When they think of a typical scientist, many people might think of the stereotypical older, white man. Only 12 women have been the recipients of a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, despite the accolade being awarded to 216 individuals since its establishment in 1901. For decades the scientific research community has (at times) disproportionately supported, favoured and rewarded the endeavours of male researchers.
Outlandish Knight by Minoo Dinshaw
The biography of one of the greatest British historians - but also of a uniquely strange and various man. In his enormously long life (he was born in 1903 and died in 2000), Steven Runciman managed not just to be a great historian of the Crusades and Byzantium, but Grand Orator of the Orthodox Church, a member of the Order of Whirling Dervishes, Greek Astronomer Royal and Laird of Eigg.
Claude Monet And The 'Old Age Style'
"Life," Truman Capote claimed, "is a moderately good play with a badly written third act." Quite how bad that third act can be, in terms of creative effort, was graphically illustrated in 1874 by an American physician named George M. Beard. Dr. Beard parsed the lives and careers of dozens of artists, writers, philosophers and scientists, from Descartes to Dickens, in search of "the period, the decade, and year of maximum productiveness," as well as the years of lowest productivity.
Was Claude Monet the Jeff Koons of his day?
On 16 November 2016, the investment guru and philanthropist Tom Marsico, one of the wealthiest men in the United States, became a little bit richer: an auction at Christie’s in New York sold Claude Monet’s Grainstack for $81.4 million. The price, which broke the record for a Monet painting at auction, was more than six times what Marsico paid for it in 2002, proving that few investments offer a more buoyant rate of return than a Monet.
Monet’s personality differed from his paintings
One of the ironies of the life of French impressionist painter Claude Monet and his works is the difference between art and the artist. Monet’s art often can be described as calming, inviting viewers to contemplate the peaceful landscapes and the visual poetry of human activity. But Monet himself was a tormented soul. He often took a knife to his canvases.
Writer to discuss, sign copies of "Mad Enchantment" at Lyman Allyn Art Museum
Some paintings are so great that they inspired college seminars or even entire courses. Critics and scholars can devote entire careers to the analysis and meaning of just one canvas. Claude Monet's "Water Lilies" is one of those works. One of the world's most recognizable and best-loved pieces, "The Water Lilies" isn't just a mesmerizing and beautiful painting, though.

Tasting Whiskey: An Insider's Guide to the Unique Pleasures of the World's Finest Spirits, Lew Bryson, David Wondrich - Amazon.com

It should be done with care and respect during times of quiet contemplation. This is a great book for gifting: Perfect for the person who loves to sit in a comfortable chair, reading and sipping. Rise of the Robo Scientists
Is it possible to automate scientific discovery? I don’t mean automating experiments. I mean: Is it possible to build a machine—a robot scientist—that can discover new scientific knowledge? My colleagues and I have spent a decade trying to develop one. We have two main motives. The first is to better understand science.
What Tom Thomson Saw
With stunted vegetation poking through its rough Precambrian ruins, Gereaux Island has a raw, windswept charm that holds up even on a sunny July morning. My journey to the tiny island from the marina at Britt—on the north shore of the Magnetawan River, sixty-five kilometres north of Parry Sound—took only a half-hour by boat. After fifteen minutes, however, the shoreline of suntanning cottagers, gazebos, and gas barbecues gave way to Georgian Bay’s open waters and random, lurking shoals.
