Future Canadian Resistance Tactics
“We need to prepare for the possibility that the U.S. uses military coercion against Canada.” — Headline from op-ed in The Globe and Mail.
'The Francis Effect': What Pope Francis did, and couldn’t do, for the LGBTQ+ community
Every pope leaves a mark on history. Even for those not Catholic, the Pope's influence ripples through our lives, shaping global discourse and societal norms. I write this not as a Catholic but as a gay Lutheran deacon. My denomination emerged from a theological movement that sought a more direct experience of God's grace, diverging from the Roman Catholic Church.

Spotlight on Longevity Capital Models
Longevity risk is one of the largest risks that life (re)insurers are exposed to. Many firms maintain a longevity risk capital model, making sure the methodology remains relevant and proportionate to the risk. We shine a spotlight on these models here, considering how they may evolve with post-pandemic data and Solvency II reforms. Throughout, we share insights from our 2024 longevity capital survey covering 15 firms in the UK market.
United Nations Leads the Globe in Going Purple for Spirit Day
Spirit Day was truly a global phenomenon, with organizations from around the world going purple and sending a message of support to LGBTQ youth. The United Nations set the tone by highlighting a fact sheet titled “LGBTIQ+ Youth: Bullying and Violence at School” through the UN Free & Equal campaign. One startling statistic shared was that 45% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans youth globally report being bullied at school.
A beginner's guide to buying a pair of spikes
Want to improve on your speedwork and thinking of heading to the track? A pair of the best running spikes can be an important purchase for any runner of any level; and one that needs a surprising amount of consideration. There’s always the danger of choosing a shoe as they look the part; shiny, garish and branded but it’s important to remember you’re not Noah Lyles or Keely Hodgkinson — yet. Here’s my guide to choosing the right spikes.
Demonstrating the Spirituality of #SpiritDay
Every year, faith organizations join the movement to go purple for Spirit Day. This year, the horrific loss of innocent lives in Israel and Gaza has been the main focus of attention for many Jewish and Muslim organizations. These organizations are currently facing heightened bullying, harassment, antisemitism, and islamophobia, even while they grieve and process trauma.
Global figures & partners go purple to send a #SpiritDay message to youth around the world
Spirit Day is a global effort! This year, nonprofits, advocacy groups, and tourism offices from around the world went purple to demonstrate their support for LGBTQ youth.
United Nations Uses its Global Platform to Educate the World on #Spiritday
Today, the United Nations showed its support for LGBTQ youth by going purple on social media and participating in Spirit Day, the world’s largest anti-LGBTQ bullying campaign. Through their solidarity, the UN demonstrates that it’s paramount global leaders visibly acknowledge and uphold LGBTQ youth around the world. The United Nations Free & Equal Campaign, in partnership with UNESCO, published a fact sheet with data about LGBTQ bullying and violence at school.
Opinion: Springfield office market bucks big-city vacancy trends - Springfield Business Journal
I am frequently asked about the state of the real estate market in Springfield. Fortunately, despite recent changes brought on by the pandemic and subsequent recovery, the commercial real estate industry in Springfield has been strong over the past 36 months in almost all sectors. With these changes, many companies are facing uncertainty about how to best approach office workspaces to meet their needs.
Clergy, Advocates, and Artists Join GLAAD to Denounce Anti-LGBTQ Billboards Across Metro Atlanta
A different kind of digital billboard greeted metro Atlanta drivers, days before the start of LGBTQ Pride Month. Erected high above Cobb Parkway, the phrase “Proud To Be Delivered” can be seen emblazoned across the colors of the LGBTQ Pride Flag at the busy thoroughfare. While a glance at the billboard during June may lead drivers to assume the message is pro-equality, the billboards, in fact, performed a bait-and-switch.
INHERIT YOUR CALLING TO JUSTICE
I held my fortieth birthday party at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Yes, the same Stonewall Inn where in 1969 a three-day riot—led by transgender women, drag queens, and queer people of color—launched what is credited to be the modern LGBTQ movement. The Stonewall uprising birthed several LGBTQ organizations, including the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, the Gay Liberation Front, the Gay Activists Alliance, and even Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

Ross Murray, Knight Frank’s outgoing Rural Chairman gives his thoughts and lessons from a recent trip on what is happening in rural USA. Categories: Property Sector Agriculture World Regions America North America United States As I step out of the door at Knight Frank after a very interesting and fun five years as Chairman of their rural practice, I reflect on a recent farm study tour to the USA. I attended under the auspices of the European Landowner’s Organisation (ELO).
Onward Singapore! One less country will criminalize the LGBTQ community.
The Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, announced plans to repeal Section 377A of the penal code, which criminalized LGBTQ people and their relationships. The law, a holdover from British colonialism, gives a sentence of up to two years in jail for “gross indecency.” The announcement came as a part of the Prime Minister’s national day rally speech.
Four + One: A Lifelong Collector Catches The Watch Bug – And Starts A Watch Podcast
Perri Dash has lived many lives. "I've never been afraid to reinvent myself," the 35-year-old Dash tells me from his home in New Jersey. "I'm constantly growing and maturing." The proof is in his resumé. Once a supply chain manager for David Yurman, he started an event collective (after a stint working for Pharrell's brand, Billionaire Boys Club) that led him to the art world, where he began collecting and curating shows on his own. "I worked with a lot of pioneering artists," he says.
‘Tis True Friar Lawrence Be Mired in the Deaths of Many a Verona Youth, Yet, Verily, I Am Fond of His Herbal Teas
It hath been but a fortnight since untimely death stealed the walls of fair Verona, and the gloom’d streets hath since rung with hardly a hey, nary a nonny-nonny. Sorely bereft are we that remain to have such beauteous youth as love-junked Romeo and his barely ripened Juliet, and other pimplish kinsfolk beside, snatched by odious Fate unto eternal neverday.
All I Want for Christmas Is a Norse Pagan Scorn-Pole
All I want for Christmas this year is a Norse pagan scorn-pole. No new gadgets, no new clothes, not even any new books or vinyl records. All I want is a long wooden pole with a dead horse’s head stuck on the end of it that I can use to curse people with. Usually, the pole is carved with magic runes, but I can do that part myself. I want a scorn-pole because I plan to use it against my coworkers in the new year. Now—wait, wait, wait—hear me out: they deserve to be scorned.

A volleyball coach told Ellen about being fired for being gay, showing why we need the Equality Act.
Screenshot from Ellentube At the end of August, as Inoke Tonga was preparing to start the volleyball season at Valor High School in Dever, Colorado, he was confronted by school staff. He was asked to delete any social media posts with a pro-LGBTQ message, even posts that identified him as a part of the LGBTQ community. Inoke refused and was fired, and his story was picked up by local and LGBTQ media.

This Zoom Catch-Up Seems Like the Perfect Opportunity to Humblebrag About Why I’m Not Eligible for the Vaccine Yet
Hey, pal, I’m so excited to catch up with you over Zoom! It’s been too long, and I can’t wait to hear how things have been going for you this past year. To start off with, though—I saw on Instagram that you got the vaccine! That’s so amazing, congratulations! I’m not eligible for it yet, and before we talk about anything else I’d like to brag about exactly why that is and also how okay with it I am.
Happy LGBT History Month from GLAAD
October is designated as LGBT History Month. Although it feels like LGBT history is being made every day, it's worth noting that we have only achieved the gains we have today because of the toil and effort of those who came before us. LGBT History Month is an opportunity to look at the people, places, and moments that helped move the LGBT community forward on its path to acceptance.
2020 was the ‘apocalypse’ that must continue in 2021 to correct what COVID has revealed
This time last year we were blissfully unaware of what was bubbling underneath the surface of the thoughts in Christian churches and in the mindset of many Americans. We hoped it wasn’t true, and even though there were signs over the last decade, the last four years has shown that what we had hoped were merely isolated thoughts of bigotry, racism and elitism were actually more pervasive than we thought. In 2020 it seemed like we were living in the apocalypse.

Take action with GLAAD: Get your LGBTQ friends and allies to pledge to vote
In 2020, people have responded to extraordinary trauma by taking extraordinary actions. We have both marched in the streets and kept our social distance. We have taken precautions to protect our health from a virus, and also put our lives on the line to remind our government and society that the systemic killing of Black and Brown people is wrong, whether it’s done by agents of the state or by private citizens. We’ve taken a lot of drastic actions this 2020. I’m asking you to take another action.

The highly public move has prompted wariness among LGBTQ advocates and government officials.
I don't want to worry about Franklin Graham during the COVID-19 pandemic, but now I need to
It is encouraging to see all manner of people and organizations stepping up in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. We need all the help we can get to flatten the curve, treat those who are infected, and keep the rest of our health care system running for every health emergency not COVID-19 related. During a time of coming together to help and support those who are infected and at risk, I don’t want to be worried about the motivations of those who are stepping up to help.

A couple years ago, I held my 40th birthday party at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The same Stonewall Inn where, 50 years ago, a three-day uprising led by transgender women, drag queens and queer people of color launched what is credited to be the modern LGBTQ movement. The Stonewall is still a functioning bar, with a pool table on the first floor and a stage for performances on the second. That’s where I had my party.

Bostic (Virginia), McQuigg v. Bostic (Virginia), Bogan v. Baskin (Indiana), and Walker v. Wolf (Wisconsin).
What’s a Non-United Methodist LGBTQ Person to Do?
It is really painful to sit aside and watch my friends in the United Methodist Church continue to struggle with the denomination’s policies concerning LGBTQ people. Especially when the second largest protestant denomination in the United States holds such a contradiction of being filled with LGBTQ people and allies, committed to social justice, but still holds policies and doctrine that actively exclude LGBTQ people. Officially, the denomination rejects LGBTQ people.
