A shorter eating window of time-restricted eating is more beneficial for weight loss: a pooled analysis of individual data from five trials
Abstract To explore the effects of different time-restricted eating (TRE) windows on body weight, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, and lipid profile. We conducted a pooled analysis of individual participant data from five TRE trials lasting 3-6 months and timestamped food/drink ingestion recorded with the myCircadianClock app. Participants in the control arms followed habitual ad libitum diets or received brief nutritional counseling and/or written guidance on healthy eating guidelines.
The diversity and consistency of what and when people eat
Abstract The timing and types of food that people eat, along with associated daily fluctuations, can influence health and wellbeing. However, there are limited data on how eating patterns remain consistent over multiple days. Here we present an exploratory, cross-sectional analysis of over 20,000 adults who recorded more than 2.5 million food logs over 2 weeks using the myCircadianClock app. Our analysis reveals significant variability in food timing and diversity.

Bioactive nanomaterials kickstart early repair processes and Potentiate temporally modulated healing of healthy and diabetic wounds
Chronic and slow-healing wounds affect 6.5 million patients in US annually (∼1 in 38 adults) and account for $20 billion per year in health management costs [1]. Normal tissue repair proceeds along overlapping temporally regulated stages: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling [2,3].

Focus on diet and exercise
Research-based lifestyle choices can help us live healthier lives, and in this issue of Cell Metabolism, we showcase articles focused on diet and exercise interventions. Here, we take a moment to learn about the motivation and challenges behind these studies and look forward to the next steps in applying these interventions to promote metabolic health.
Ocular and extraocular roles of neuropsin in vertebrates
Highlights Several aspects of vertebrate physiology are regulated by light. Until recently, it was thought that light perception was mediated solely by retinal photoreceptors in mammals (rods, cones, and melanopsin cells), and by retinal and pineal opsin (pinopsin) in birds. An additional opsin, neuropsin (OPN5), sensitive to UV and short-wavelength light, has been detected in multiple species of vertebrates, including birds, rodents, and humans.
Alternate-Day Fasting Gets a Safe Bill of Health
Various forms of fasting improve health and longevity in preclinical models. However, safety, outcomes, and the molecular changes underpinning human fasting are unclear. Stekovic et al. Interplay between Circadian Clock and Cancer: New Frontiers for Cancer Treatment
Highlights The circadian clock establishes daily rhythms in multiple physiological processes to maintain homeostasis. Circadian rhythm disruption and circadian core clock alterations promote cancer initiation. The circadian clock machinery and circadian rhythms control several cancer hallmarks. Pharmacological modulation of the circadian clock provides a novel anticancer strategy.
Timing tweaks exercise
Exercise is the elixir of health. However, timing can boost or blunt exercise performance and health benefits. Two complementary studies used transcriptomic and metabolomic tools to dissect how time of day affects the impact of exercise. The findings open new avenues for optimizing timing of physical activity to boost its benefits further. References 1. Gabriel, B. M. & Zierath, J. R. A Smartphone App Reveals Erratic Diurnal Eating Patterns in Humans that Can Be Modulated for Health Benefits
Highlights • The daily eating pattern in healthy adults is highly variable from day to day • More than half of the adults eat for 15 hr or longer every day • Sleep duration parallels the fasting duration • Reducing the daily eating duration can contribute to weight loss Summary A diurnal rhythm of eating-fasting promotes health, but the eating pattern of humans is rarely assessed. Using a mobile app, we monitored ingestion events in healthy adults with no shift-work for several days.
The arrival of circadian medicine
Circadian rhythm research is beginning to show how rhythms sustain health. Genome-wide transcriptome, metabolome and proteome studies have improved our understanding of circadian regulation. This knowledge is leveraged for behavioural interventions that optimize daily rhythms, the timing of drug delivery and the targeting of clock components to prevent or treat chronic diseases. Key advances A reference human circadian transcriptome atlas elucidated tissue-specific circadian regulation1.
Circadian physiology of metabolism
A majority of mammalian genes exhibit daily fluctuations in expression levels, making circadian expression rhythms the largest known regulatory network in normal physiology. Cell-autonomous circadian clocks interact with daily light-dark and feeding-fasting cycles to generate approximately 24-hour oscillations in the function of thousands of genes. Circadian expression of secreted molecules and signaling components transmits timing information between cells and tissues.
Fasting, Circadian Rhythms, and Time-Restricted Feeding in Healthy Lifespan
Most animals alternate periods of feeding with periods of fasting often coinciding with sleep. Upon >24 hr of fasting, humans, rodents, and other mammals enter alternative metabolic phases, which rely less on glucose and more on ketone body-like carbon sources. Both intermittent and periodic fasting result in benefits ranging from the prevention to the enhanced treatment of diseases.
Mobile app records our erratic eating habits
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner? For too many of us, the three meals of the day go more like: office meeting pastry, mid-afternoon energy drink, and midnight pizza. In Cell Metabolism on September 24, Salk Institute scientists present daily food and beverage intake data collected from over 150 participants of a mobile research app over 3 weeks.
