Urgency to Propose Normative Soil Limits for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Targeting PFOA and PFOS Click to copy article link Article link copied!
Impacts from Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Polluted Soils Click to copy section linkSection link copied! PFAS have recently been a major environmental challenge because of their ubiquity in water, soils, air, rain, food, and house dust. Concerns have been raised about the presence of PFAS in soils, particularly from biosolids/sewage sludge, which have led to the contamination of farmland, affecting crops, livestock, and groundwater.
PFAS behavior in the environment: transport pathways, physicochemical properties, and emerging precursors
Abstract Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic fluorinated organic pollutants that have gained widespread application in various industrial and consumer products. This review examines the unique chemical properties of PFAS, such as their strong carbon-fluorine bonds, which make them highly persistent in the environment and resistant to degradation.

How to Remove Some Persistent Pollutants from Your Drinking Water at Home
Installing a filter at the main kitchen sink is the most cost-effective option for reducing exposure to PFAS in water. (Shutterstock) What are PFAS and why are they dangerous in drinking water? How can you effectively remove PFAS from your home’s water supply? What are the best filtration methods for reducing PFAS? Why bottled water isn’t a sustainable solution to PFAS exposure. What are the pros and cons of different residential water filtration systems?

Many substances harmful to human health are finding their way into our drinking water. These include the so-called ‘forever chemicals,’ per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). A group of fluorinated chemical compounds, they are resistant to degradation, bioaccumulate in tissues, and are highly mobile in the environment.
Ils ont également fait l’objet du documentaire primé « The Devil We Know ».
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Contaminated Soil and Groundwater at Airports: A Canadian Case Study
The occurrence of 93 classes of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) was investigated at aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF)-impacted sites of four Canadian airports. Surface/subsurface soil and groundwater samples were characterized using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and an improved total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay.
Modified clays reduce leaching of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances from AFFF‐contaminated soils
1 INTRODUCTION Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been widely detected in environmental compartments, wildlife, and humans (Zhi & Liu, 2018). PFAS are chemically persistent (Houtz et al., 2013), some species are found bioaccumulative (Giesy & Kannan, 2001; Haug et al., 2010), and therefore this family of man-made chemicals poses considerable risks to humans and wildlife (Sunderland et al., 2019).
Stability of Nitrogen-Containing Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Aerobic Soils
Zwitterionic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) used in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) could face diverse environmental fates once released at military bases, airports, fire-training areas, and accidental release sites. Here, we studied for the first time the transformation potential of four electrochemical fluorination (ECF)-based PFAS zwitterions (two carboxyl betaines and two tertiary amines) in aerobic soils.
Pesticide research must stay transparent and independent
Workers spray pesticides on strawberry fields. Most of the studies that examine the effects of pesticides are funded by the chemical’s producer. Credit: Shutterstock Few people would make an important purchase on trust alone. The same logic applies to pesticides. Getting the best scientific information about the safety of pesticides can be challenging. There is almost always some uncertainty in the science, making it sometimes difficult to navigate the research on pesticides.
