The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants to replace millions of lead water pipes across the country, but it's a heavy lift for some small towns like Mount Olive. There are more than 9 million lead water pipes in the United States, according to the EPA. The EPA is proposing that towns and cities across the country replace all lead water service lines in the next 10 years.

Regenerative farming: Old soil-focused practice saves Mount Olive family farm

An old soil-rich farming practice called regenerative farming is making a comeback and having a positive impact on a family farm in Mount Olive. Agriculture is North Carolina's number one economic driver, bringing more than $90 billion to the state. Despite those numbers, N.C. ranks number two for farmland loss in the United States, according to the American Farmland Trust. North Carolina could lose more than one million acres of farmland by 2040.

Animal shelter in crisis: More dogs are being killed at rural NC shelters

Animal shelters across the country are facing a capacity crisis -- too many dogs are coming in, and fewer are leaving. Vance County Animal Shelter is one of many North Carolina shelters seeing the same problem. Euthanasia rates have increased at the shelter at 1243 Brodie Road in Henderson because there isn't enough space for all of the dogs coming in.
