Exploring computational approaches to law: the evolution of judicial language in the Anglo‐Welsh poor law, 1691-1834
1 INTRODUCTION Summing up recent historiography on the Anglo-Welsh poor law, Brodie Waddell writes: ‘[S]cholars have, with some justification, seen the poor relief system as a key contributing factor in grand narratives of state formation, economic growth and industrialisation’. From the early seventeenth century, the poor law operated as a proto-welfare state, the first of its kind in Europe and the most extensive and comprehensive in its operation.

The international community must respond to Gaza’s health catastrophe
Republish this article Israel’s ongoing military assault is on the brink of destroying Gaza’s healthcare system, threatening to create a public health disaster that will last long after the bombs stop falling and contribute to significantly more deaths. Much of the international community has lined up to support the Israeli military’s response to Hamas’ heinous 7 October attacks.
‘Is Ukraine on the Path of Shock Therapy?’ – Byline Times
Victory for Ukraine is not just about defeating Russia but avoiding the approach Putin’s country has taken with its economy, write Gerhard Schnyder and Simon Deakin Share EmailTwitterFacebook Western media has recently reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is now fighting two wars: one with Russia and another one with corruption in his own country.
‘Failing to succeed’: the role of Cambridge economics in making the case for the minimum wage
According to the Cambridge economist John Maynard Keynes, the problem facing policy makers in democracies ‘is to combine three objectives: economic efficiency, social justice and individual liberty’. Labour lawyers and trade unionists might agree on the last two, but the first is more contentious. This is perhaps because of the recent dominance of neoliberal understandings of the economy.
ORGANISATIONAL TORTS: VICARIOUS LIABILITY VERSUS NON-DELEGABLE DUTY
ON 18 October 2017, the UK Supreme Court decided Armes v Nottinghamshire County Council [2017] UKSC 60. The Court ruled that a local authority could be vicariously liable for intentional torts committed by foster parents against a child whom the authority had placed in their care. The outcome was not entirely unexpected. Less than two decades ago it would have been inconceivable.
A closer look at the withdrawal agreement and its political implications - UK in a changing Europe
A closer look at the withdrawal agreement and its political implications There seems to be little possibility of the Commons approving the withdrawal agreement on 11 December. It is, however, still worth taking a closer look at the Agreement, as it will frame the political debate over the next fortnight and possibly beyond if a second vote is proposed. The text we currently have is significantly different from the one drawn up in March 2018.
Alignment, Convergence And A Symbolic Brexit
The document agreed by the EU and UK in the early hours of 8 December 2017 is not a contract or treaty, merely a ‘joint report‘ on progress made in phase one of the Brexit negotiations. However, its contents are likely to be incorporated into the withdrawal agreement envisaged by Article 50 TEU and, in due course, into a free trade agreement (FTA) between the UK and EU. These will be treaties with legal effects.
The ban on Uber in London shows that regulators are finally catching up with technology
In what could be a major blow to the gig economy, Transport for London has refused to renew Uber’s licence to operate in the UK capital – its largest European market – on the grounds that its approach and conduct “demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility” on issues which “have potential public safety and security implications”.

Opting Out of the 48-Hour Week: Employer Necessity or Individual Choice? An Empirical Study of the Operation of Article 18(1)(b) of the Working Time Directive in the UK
The EU Working Time Directive has so far had little impact on an ingrained culture of long-hours working in the UK. Case studies suggest that the use of individual opt-outs from the 48-hour limit on weekly working time is a principal reason for this. However, removal of the individual opt-out (currently under consideration at EU level) is unlikely to make much difference to UK practice in the absence of a wider review of working time policy.
Governance Processes, Labour-Management Partnership and Employee Voice in the Construction of Heathrow Terminal 5
The Major Projects Agreement (MPA) is a framework collective agreement designed to enhance performance outcomes in large mechanical and electrical engineering projects. It includes the trade union as a partner in strategic, organisational and employment decisions. The agreement was recently implemented in the construction of Heathrow Terminal 5 (T5).
Does the ‘Personal Employment Contract’ Provide a Basis for the Reunification of Employment Law?
This article considers Mark Freedland's idea, at the core of The Personal Employment Contract, that a unified body of employment law for ‘employees’ and ‘workers’ is both feasible and desirable. It discusses the origins of the division between employees and the self-employed, and considers whether the rediscovery of the worker concept in the 1990s has provided the hoped-for solution to problems concerning the coverage of employment legislation.
Luddism In The Age Of Uber
A common response to the wave of protests over Uber is that its opponents are ‘Luddites’. The implication is that resistance to new technology today will prove futile, just as it did in the nineteenth century, when the original Luddites were unable to prevent the rise of the factory. This view misunderstands what Luddism represented, and fails to see why its example is still relevant. The Luddites are often characterised as ‘machine breakers’ but there was more to them than that.
