10 Chinese and Pakistani Nuclear Postures and Strategies
Reports & Papers from Oxford Academic This chapter, written by Šumit Ganguly and Spencer Warren for The Oxford Handbook of Warfare in Asia, examines the nuclear modernization programs of China and Pakistan. It argues that these developments are shaped by a set of interlocking security relationships—between the United States and China, China and India, and India and Pakistan—rather than by any single bilateral rivalry.
A conflict of attrition: Iran’s bet on asymmetric warfare
A conflict of attrition: Iran’s bet on asymmetric warfare Destabilizing the global economy is perhaps Iran’s most visible and salient use of asymmetric warfare. Tehran has used artillery strikes, sea mines, and electronic warfare to impede transit through the Strait of Hormuz, dominating a vital maritime chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s fossil fuels and fertilizers transit. By Spenser A.
When the world's at stake, go beyond the headlines.
In 2024, John Stanko and Spenser Warren wrote, “Russian Threat Perception and Nuclear Strategy in its Plans for War with China,” where they explained some of the potential tensions between Russia and China that could make armed conflict between the two countries a possibility. Two years later, we asked them to revisit their arguments.
Greenland Is Strategic. Annexation Is Not
As sea temperatures and geopolitical tensions simultaneously heat up, Greenland’s strategic importance increases. Against this backdrop, the specter of American territorial expansion has emerged as a new factor that is complicating Arctic security. The evolving security environment in the Arctic necessitates deeper American involvement in the region. Specifically, the United States needs to enhance its military presence in Greenland by improving regional air and missile defenses.
Escalation Risks Rising? Airpower in Kargil and Pahalgam
Article from Washington Quarterly In the 1999 Kargil conflict, the Indian Air Force in the end acquitted itself admirably; in the 2025 Pahalgam case, the IAF's performance appeared to be lackluster at best. What explains the markedly different outcomes of the use of airpower? And what strategic lessons did India learn?
No one wants to lead anymore (and why that’s a mistake)
No one wants to lead anymore (and why that’s a mistake) Four years ago, I gave up being a leader. I was tired of all the responsibilities that came from leading a team, having a mountain of work on my plate, and doing work that I’d lost passion for. I wanted to pivot from HR to writing professionally (though I didn’t know what that would look like at the time). I figured if writing full-time didn’t work out that I could be an HR or compensation consultant or find some other way to make a living.
Visible leadership, invisible growth
This points to the first major challenge of being in a leadership role: Whether you’re leading an entire organization or a small team, every decision you make is up for scrutiny. Some of your direct reports may think they have a better way of doing things. Others may be more of a subject-matter expert than you are and won’t give you respect because they feel you lack credibility.
What needs to be reborn in your leadership?
How embracing rebirth transformed me — and can make you a better leader, too Dear Leader, When you become a leader, a part of you is reborn. The question is, are we ready to answer the call to not only lead, but to become a stronger and more capable version of ourselves in the process? That’s what I’ll be reflecting on in today’s edition of The Leader Within.
5 lessons learned from embracing the call of leadership

Russian novel nuclear weapons and strategic nuclear deterrence between the United States and Russia
Abstract Russia is developing several novel nuclear weapons. This paper examines the impact of these systems on strategic nuclear deterrence between Russia and the United States. I argue that if Russia can produce these weapons in sufficient numbers–and if their claims about the weapons’ capabilities are true–they will allow Russia to maintain a secure second-strike capability but will not erode the second-strike capabilities of the United States.

Stop Performing. Start Leading.
The exhausting toll of performative leadership — and the freedom of leading authentically Dear Leader, They say the third time’s the charm. I’m hoping this third edition of The Leader Within is the best yet! At the end of last week’s newsletter, I briefly touched on the four pillars of Responsible Leadership. I also shared how each plays a crucial role in shaping Responsible Leaders.
Why now is the time for Responsible Leadership
We need a new model of leadership Dear Leader, Last week, I shared with you the moral imperative behind a new way of leading. True leadership isn’t leading simply to benefit ourselves. Rather, we must lead responsibly, with the genuine well-being of our followers and those we lead at the forefront. Otherwise, what are we leading for? It’s this question that is at the heart of today’s newsletter. In this edition, I’ll outline why Responsible Leadership is needed now more than ever.
We are all one - The moral foundation for Responsible Leadership
The Leader Within is your weekly guide to authentic, bold leadership rooted in awareness, purpose, and personal responsibility. Subscribe here: https://tinyurl.com/53kks5a3 Follow publication Dear Leader, Welcome to the very first edition of The Leader Within. It’s an honor for me, a 34-year-old gay white male Leadership Coach with a background in HR, UX, and action thriller novels, to write to you about my views on leadership.
Called to Lead: My New Role as Leadership Coach
For a year, I squeezed myself into coaching niches that didn’t fit. But leadership kept knocking — and I finally answered the call. When I first launched my coaching business just over a year ago, I positioned myself as a career coach. Then, a few months after landing my first client, I pivoted to work-life balance coaching, before focusing on other gay male clients who are also high achievers.
Called to Lead: Failure as a Leader
My last leadership role ended in failure. I stepped down as a Senior Manager — and questioned if I ever wanted to lead again. After an internal promotion to my first formal corporate leadership role, I applied for a new management role in a different company presiding over three functions: compensation, benefits, and HRIS. This was a big change for me, as I only oversaw 2 functions and one full-time employee in my first manager role.
Called to Lead: My Unexpected Promotion to Manager
Sometimes the call of leadership rings when you least expect it. 9 months into a new job, I was promoted to manager. I’d moved to Chicago earlier that year to join a hyper-growth healthcare company. In my role, I was asked to design, document, and iterate on salary and bonus programs. Along the way, I worked with leaders throughout the company, including VPs and founders, to use compensation to drive business goals forward.
Responsible Leadership: What is it and why does it matter for leaders?
I have a new vision for leadership. A vision where leaders strive for the benefit of all, and not just their own ego. I’m calling it Responsible Leadership. While not a completely new term, my view of Responsible Leadership encompasses values I feel modern leaders must hold to guide our world from one that serves the collective egosystem of individual concerns to one that allows all humans to flourish. Every leader I’ve ever admired has demonstrated the principal values of Responsible Leadership.

Russian Threat Perception and Nuclear Strategy in its Plans for War with China
Even as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese General Secretary Xi Jinping a were forming “a new epoch in relations” between their two countries, Russia was still planning for the possibility of nuclear war against China as late as 2014. Recently leaked Russian documents reveal contingencies for such a war against China in Siberia, including potential scenarios for the use of nuclear weapons against China. Russian planning for a nuclear war with China may seem surprising in hindsight.
This One Question Will Unlock Career Clarity
How I discovered what I wanted to do with my career Are you still not sure what you want to do when you grow up? Most of us face a career crisis now and then. I faced it myself a few years ago when I transitioned from a decade long career in HR to become a User Experience (UX) Writer. But long before that, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my career in the long term. It was 2015, and I’d spent a few years in my first HR role as a Compensation and HRIS Analyst.
