Blue Jays' Stroman unlikely to pitch again this season
Marcus Stroman's battle with blisters appears to be over, and it looks like he came out on the losing end. Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Stroman will "probably not" pitch again this year, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith. The 27-year-old has expressed a desire to pitch through the problem, but with 18 games left on Toronto's schedule, his chances of doing so appear to be slim.
Mets' deGrom breaks 108-year-old record with latest quality start
In case you hadn't realized, Jacob deGrom is pretty good at pitching. The New York Mets right-hander went seven innings against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, striking out nine and allowing two runs on three hits. With this outing, he broke a major-league record by allowing three or fewer earned runs in 26 consecutive starts, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The previous record-holder was Leslie "King" Cole, who managed the feat in 25 straight starts in 1910 with the Chicago Cubs.

NFL Week 2 Betting Update: Taking advantage of potential overreactions
If you kept tabs on Week 1 or even just glossed over the box scores, you likely came away with the following takes: Those three bullet points could be true going forward. However, the common fan or sports bettor can easily put too much stock in a one-game sample size and apply it to a team's performance the upcoming week, which happens a lot after Week 1.
Packers rookie Tim Boyle bought himself a Rodgers jersey
Green Bay Packers third-string quarterback Tim Boyle was so impressed by Aaron Rodgers' performance in the team's regular-season opener that he went out and bought a No. 12 jersey. Boyle, an undrafted rookie out of Connecticut, was spotted wearing the jersey around the locker room and as he was leaving Lambeau Field on Monday. "No, I did not lose a bet," Boyle told ESPN's Rob Demovsky.
Mets' deGrom will only start on short rest for unlikely playoff push
New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom will only get four more starts in 2018 unless he's used on short rest. For that to happen, it would take a minor miracle. Mets manager Mickey Callaway said the only way deGrom will pitch under that circumstance is if the team makes a late push for the postseason, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. With the Mets 14 games back in the NL East as well as the wild-card race, it's not likely.
Watch: Spain's Asensio uncorks pair of wicked strikes vs. Croatia
Marco Asensio came to play against Croatia. With Spain already leading Tuesday's Nations League contest 1-0 thanks to a header from Saul Niguez, the Real Madrid winger belted in a second for La Furia Roja against the World Cup runner-up, capitalizing on an errant pass outside the box and firing an unstoppable effort past Lovre Kalinic in goal.
10 things we learned in Week 1 of the NFL season
Truths were uncovered and myths debunked during the first full slate of NFL action this past week. Would Jimmy Garoppolo ever lose? Would the helmet rule make games five hours long? Week 1 of the 2018 regular season answered those questions and more. Seven teams entered the year with new head coaches at the helm. All seven of those teams lost in Week 1.

Georgia HS OL coach gives out maple syrup shots for pancake blocks
A high school offensive line coach in Georgia has come up with a creative way to reward his players for their biggest blocks. For every pancake block or touchdown, Darrian Carmicheal - who coaches at Jonesboro High School - doles out shots of maple syrup to his linemen on the sideline. Carmichael told Cam Smith of USA TODAY Sports he first started carrying around a bottle of Aunt Jemima while coaching at DeKalb County last year.
Seguin’s disappointment casts shadow over Stars as training camp nears
TORONTO - Tyler Seguin wants you to know he is disappointed. Specifically, he is disappointed in the Dallas Stars for not offering a contract of his liking this summer and is unhappy because negotiations have been nonexistent of late. It was easy to draw these conclusions Tuesday, as Seguin uttered the words "disappointing" and "disappointed" a total of four times in a six-minute media scrum focused mainly on the potential 2019 free agent’s future with the Stars.
Pacioretty, Canadiens still not talking contract extension
It would appear nothing has changed in terms of Max Pacioretty's uncertain future. At his charity golf tournament Tuesday, the Montreal Canadiens captain told reporters, including TVA's Renaud Lavoie, that no contract extension talks are happening at the moment. Pacioretty is entering the final season of his current deal after reportedly nearly being traded at the draft and at the deadline in February.
Seguin disappointed that extension with Stars isn't done
Could this be the beginning of the Tyler Seguin sweepstakes? The Dallas Stars center can become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and while the club said in July that it was hopeful to sign him prior to this season, he's frustrated that the two sides haven't already agreed on a contract extension. "Nothing's really going on. Pretty much haven't been talking much this summer. It's been a little disappointing," Seguin told theScore's John Matisz on Tuesday.

Oilers' Nurse optimistic new deal will be reached before training camp

Guerrero traveled with the Patriots to Carolina for Friday's preseason game against the Panthers.

Beware of Atletico: Why they're Barcelona's main rival this season
Spanish football changed when Atletico Madrid won La Liga in May 2014. It was the first time in a decade a team other than Real Madrid or Barcelona had clinched the title, achieved with a fraction of the budget. It was a triumph of defense, perseverance, and organization, the three pillars of Diego Simeone's tactical revolution. Where crosstown rivals Madrid relied on individual talent, Atleti drew power from the collective.

New York Giants outside linebacker Olivier Vernon's status for Week 1 is unclear after he suffered a sprained ankle Sunday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Responding to a report Sunday that the Senators were looking to deal Anderson early in the summer, the veteran netminder reiterated that he's happy in the nation's capital, barring anymore drama. "I love Ottawa, I love playing in Ottawa," the 37-year-old told reporters. "I'm too old for drama. I don't want anything to do with drama. Hopefully we've resolved all of that.
Hard-luck Homer: Reds fall to 1-17 when Bailey starts
It hasn't been a pretty season for Cincinnati Reds right-hander Homer Bailey - and that's being kind. Bailey's woes continued Sunday at Wrigley Field when he allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings, as Cincinnati fell 9-0 to the Chicago Cubs. Bailey was saddled with the loss, dropping his record to 1-12, and extending a dreadful pattern for the Reds this year whenever he's taken the hill.

The heir apparent: Jackson indicates Mayfield is Browns' backup QB
Hue Jackson has maintained all offseason that Tyrod Taylor will be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. On Sunday, the head coach seemingly revealed the team's backup. "I think that I already proved who that is. It is Baker (Mayfield)," Jackson said at his post-practice press conference Sunday. Jackson seemed to prove it with his actions on Thursday.
Real Madrid survive Girona scare thanks to Benzema, Bale
Madrid - Karim Benzema netted twice and Gareth Bale scored a trademark goal as Real Madrid overcame an early scare at Girona to win 4-1 on Sunday. Seeking their second win of the new La Liga season, the European champions went behind after Borja Garcia opened the scoring for Girona with a superb goal after 17 minutes. Real briefly looked rattled as Girona probed and Marcelo was continually exposed in the Real defence.
Rays' Snell: 'I could see us making a playoff push'
The Tampa Bay Rays have won eight straight and they're feeling confident after becoming the first team to sweep the Boston Red Sox in 2018. Eagles' Pederson: Wentz not yet cleared for contact
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz hasn't been cleared for contact yet as his recovery from a torn ACL continues, head coach Doug Pederson said Sunday. Pederson appears to be growing tired of speaking about Wentz's status. "I don't know how many times I can answer this question," Pederson said via ESPN's Tim McManus. "When they clear him, he'll be cleared. I'm not going to put myself in a box, I'm not going to put my quarterback in a box. I'm not going to do that.

Tiger encouraged by driver play at The Northern Trust despite subpar finish
Tiger Woods' first appearance in the FedEx Cup Playoffs since 2013 resulted in a mundane 40th-place finish at The Northern Trust. But despite struggling on the greens for most of the week - the main culprit for only recording just nine birdies - Woods believes he found something in his game he can take to the next leg of the postseason. "I played a lot better than my score indicates," Tiger said in his post-round interview, via Golf Channel.
Horford 'glad' Carter will wear his old No. 15 with Hawks
If the No. 15 was to ever be worn again by a member of the Atlanta Hawks following Al Horford's departure in 2016, the center is at least happy it'll now be donned by someone he has a great deal of respect and admiration for. The number has been issued to 41-year-old veteran Vince Carter, who signed a one-year contract with the Hawks this summer. "Vince is someone I look up to and I'm glad he's wearing the number!" Horford told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Chris Vivlamore.

4 Of Minnesota’s Great Playoff Disappointments
It wasn’t supposed to end like that for the University of Minnesota softball team. The Gophers program entered the national spotlight last week after, despite winning the Big Ten Tournament and having a 55-4 record, they didn’t receive one of the top 16 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. They had the best record in the country, but the NCAA selection committee didn’t feel they were one of the 16 best teams, and therefore, didn’t host a regional.
