A deadly disease called stony coral tissue loss disease is rapidly killing coral off the coast of Miami, threatening the largest coral reef in the United States, which stretches over 300 miles from Martin County to Dry Tortugas National Park. Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines is part of the Florida Reef Tract Rescue Project, working to save the coral through its "Salt Room," a bio-secure, man-made life support system.

The Wyoming toad's natural habitat is Wyoming's Laramie Basin.

Des Moines shelter gives special needs dogs a second chance at life

Animal Lifeline of Iowa, a special-needs, no-kill animal shelter on Des Moines' south side, has been saving animals for nearly 40 years, often taking in animals with severe injuries that might not have a chance anywhere else.
