The smallpox ghost in Voltaire’s life: inoculation and the origins of vaccine acceptance Original
Abstract Smallpox shaped eighteenth-century debates on risk, trust, and prevention. Voltaire, marked by the disease throughout his life—the “smallpox ghost”—emerged as a prominent advocate of smallpox inoculation (variolation), a preventive practice that preceded Jennerian vaccination by several decades. Through his writings, he framed the practice as a conflict between empirical reasoning and social resistance.

I put the ‘R’ in the MMR vaccine, and I’m scared that, like measles, rubella could make a comeback under RFK Jr. |Opinion
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s efforts to make the use of the MMR vaccine voluntary is not only letting loose measles, with all its acute and long-lasting effects, but also will allow mumps and German measles (rubella) to return to America. MMR is called by those three letters because it contains vaccines against mumps and rubella, as well as measles.
A vaccine against cytomegalovirus: how close are we?
Abstract The pursuit of a vaccine against the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has been ongoing for more than 50 years. HCMV is the leading infectious cause of birth defects, including damage to the brain, and is a common cause of complications in organ transplantation.

A Covid-19 Milestone Attained — A Correlate of Protection for Vaccines | NEJM
The rapid identification of a correlate of protection (CoP) for Covid-19 vaccines — on the basis of several harmonized randomized phase 3 trials using common validated assays — constitutes an important success in vaccinology. A CoP is an immune marker that can be used to reliably predict a vaccine’s level of efficacy in preventing a clinically relevant outcome.

PD: The CoPs working group falls under the COVAX pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. COVAX is the vaccines initiative that was co-convened by WHO, Gavi, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and UNICEF.

Texans seceding from the union?
By Dr. Stanley Plotkin The press has reported that people in Texas are threatening to secede from the union. I think this is a great idea. We could do fine without the noise, exaggeration and bloviation. In fact, it might even be better if Texas took with it some of the Southern states still dedicated to Trump. We might lose Florida, but money brought by tourists would probably convince that former state to welcome Americans. Dr. Stanley Plotkin Doylestown
Let’s get rid of Donald Trump in November Original
I am a registered Republican and have been one since coming to Bucks County in 1998. However, this year I am going to vote against the Republican nominee for president, Donald Trump, and I am writing to urge other Republicans not to vote for Trump. Why am I doing this after all these years? Because I can no longer stomach supporting such an awful person, who betrays all the principles that have made America great in the past.

Advancing Our Understanding of Protective Maternal Immunity as a Guide for Development of Vaccines To Reduce Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infections
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the most common congenitally transmitted pathogen worldwide, impacting an estimated 1 million newborns annually. Congenital HCMV (cCMV) infection is a major global contributor to long-term neurologic deficits, including deafness, microcephaly, and neurodevelopmental delay, as well as to fetal loss and occasional infant mortality. Accordingly, design of a maternal vaccine to prevent cCMV continues to be a top public health priority.

Strategies to Decrease Pertussis Transmission to Infants
The Global Pertussis Initiative (GPI) is an expert scientific forum addressing the worldwide burden of pertussis, which remains a serious health issue, especially in infants. This age cohort is at risk for developing pertussis by transmission from those in close proximity. Risk is increased in infants aged 0 to 6 weeks, as they are too young to be vaccinated. Older infants are at risk when their vaccination schedules are incomplete.
Vaccines and Autism: A Tale of Shifting Hypotheses
Although child vaccination rates remain high, some parental concern persists that vaccines might cause autism.
Opinion | Bring Back the Lyme Vaccine
Op-Ed Contributor Sept. 18, 2013 PHILADELPHIA — IN August 2005 my son Alec, then 39 years old, collapsed into unconsciousness while walking his dog in the suburbs of Philadelphia. By the time he arrived at the hospital, his heart rate had slowed to 30 beats per minute. Fortunately, an experienced physician recognized that Alec was having a cardiac complication of Lyme infection. Installation of a pacemaker and an infusion of antibiotics saved his life.
Untruths and consequences: the false hypothesis linking CHAT type 1 polio vaccination to the origin of human immunodeficiency virus
Abstract A book published in 1999 hypothesized that the scientists who worked with the CHAT type 1 attenuated polio strain tested in the former Belgian Congo in the late 1950s had covertly prepared the vaccine in chimpanzee kidney cells contaminated with a simian immunodeficiency virus, which evolved into HIV–1 group M. This paper summarizes the results of the investigation conducted by the author to determine the legitimacy of the accusation.
