Storm, Yukio and queer subtext
Queer comic characters Storm and Yukio have had their relationship relegated to subtext, but contributor Stephanie Williams has found comfort there. The comic book medium has always been and will always be one of my favorite mediums of storytelling. The art-filled pages beautifully blend genres and often provide evidence of things left unsaid in the text, offering a chance to make an easier connection with subtext, especially when what you’re interpreting is also backed up by the art of the page.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier tucks Sam Wilson easter egg into Smiling Tiger reference
© Provided by Total Film Sam Wilson in Falcon and the Winter Solider. The third episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is packed full of easter eggs. One of the biggest in the latest episode - titled Power Broker - was the inclusion of Wolverine’s bar located in Madripoor. It could be a mere coincidence, but perhaps episode three writer Derek Kolstad is aware of one of Sam Wilson’s origin stories which featured him as a pimp.
'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier': The Truth About Isaiah Bradley

Professor Charles Xavier’s jerkdom transcends all media he has made an appearance in; it’s that powerful. He is an omega level clown, which is probably why he treats his X-Men like circus acts.

74 thoughts we had while watching So I Married An Axe Murderer
So I Married an Axe Murderer is one of the few Mike Myers movies I missed completely growing up. Of course, I'd heard of it before, and I even remember seeing it on display at the Family Video my family frequented. All I remember thinking at the time whenever I'd see the VHS box was, "Why the hell does this guy look so gleeful if he married a murderer?" I wondered how absolutely strong this woman had to be to kill people with an ax. Have you ever chopped wood before? It's a workout.
Hocus Pocus, Tales from the Hood and the privilege of low-stakes horror
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Black horror comedy-drama anthology Tales from the Hood. It's a movie that's both a comforting and a stressful watch for me. It's also a movie that is inextricably tied to the movie Hocus Pocus in my head. Neither of those two sentences makes a lick of sense, but both are true because of the way we were introduced.
Welcome to the Blumhouse, where representation behind the screen matters
If you're looking for movies from fresh voices, then look no further, thanks in part to the Welcome to the Blumhouse collection, which offers a slate of new horror and thriller genre movies on Amazon Prime, all of which have exciting new perspectives driving them. Evil Eye, Nocturne, and The Lie were all written by women, and the latter two were also directed by their respective writers.
The two sides of empowerment for Black women in Lovecraft Country
Misha Green's HBO series, Lovecraft Country, did a great job making me feel uncomfortable through most of its first season. Much of that feeling had to do with the show's treatment of darker-skinned characters. Their story arcs and representation matter because colorism has been a longstanding issue within the Black community — while it also exists as an even bigger universal problem.
The marvelous butts of Marvel comics
Spandex became a popular material in the '80s, some 25 years after it was invented in 1958 by a chemist, Joseph Shivers. But it wasn't just Jazzercise enthusiasts who were willing participants in the spandex revolution; fictional superheroes have truly gotten maximum usage out of the stretchy material. Often in comics, the male gaze has benefited from artists doing the most when drawing female superheroes in their skintight suits.

Black Box, The Lie, and Evil Eye take on parental love
I've always had a soft spot for horror movies and the occasional psychological thriller that focus on parent-child relationships. These relationships can be extremely complex and test the limits of what it means to love someone. When I was younger, some of my greatest fears stemmed from worrying about my parents' well being. Even as an adult, I still hold on to these same fears, but now as a parent myself, a new source of those fears and worries are rooted in concern for my child.
65 thoughts we had while watching Serial Mom
Nowadays, I can't think of the pussy willow plant without automatically thinking of the black comedy Serial Mom. My earliest memories are of my middle school classmates getting themselves in trouble for saying it at the best — by which I mean worst — possible times in class. But I didn't truly get it. It felt like everyone knew about this inside joke but me until a friend finally let me in on the secret reference.
8 Black Final Girls whose hairstyles survived the horror
More info i Credit: Paramount Pictures Surviving a horror movie is no easy task. Surviving a horror movie as the token person of color? A momentous task, but it happens. Looking at both TV and film, we can pull together a reasonably healthy list of Black Final Girls. Some of these characters find themselves in situations they could have avoided had they just asked an old Black proverb, “Who all gone be there.” The answer probably would have kept them at home.
Ororo Munroe, goddess of funny
More info i Credit: Marvel ComicsConsidering all the rumblings that they might actually recast Halle Berry with a younger actress at some point soon for the upcoming Apocalypse, it’s high time we get an origin story for Ororo, the former Wakanda queen consort with a checkered past as a child thief in Cairo. She’s one of the most prolific members of the team, and has been for decades. She absolutely deserves her own spin-off.
85 thoughts we had while watching Cherry 2000
Every so often, while scrolling aimlessly through streaming services, you find gems you never knew existed. Sometimes they begin playing before you've actually gotten a chance to read the synopsis. Imagine that happening, and it's Cherry 2000. You find yourself quickly having to pause after the first five minutes to ask the burning question: Why did this man continue to roll around in lust with a robot in water if there was a chance it would get damaged? Also, why is this man married to a robot?
In Hollywoodland speaks an authentic, encouraging truth
We all have unique journeys in life that help shape and mold us; experiences that impact how we interact with the world, how we navigate it. There are times when those moments overlap with others, and we find camaraderie in the ups and downs felt along the way. When these shared experiences bring us together creatively, it can resonate in ways that inspire others to find value in their own journeys — maybe even empowering them to tell their own stories.
Chadwick Boseman Brought Black History and Power to Life In Ways That Will Inspire For Generations

80 thoughts we had while watching The Cell (2000)
Twenty years ago, the movie The Cell graced everyone else in the world with its presence except for me. I vividly remember wanting to see this movie because Jennifer Lopez was in it. I wore the CD single of "If You Had My Love" out. The visuals from the trailer gave me TRL top 10 vibes, and I knew it was going to be one of those movies that I wasn't supposed to see at 12 — which only increased the need to view it.
67 thoughts we had while watching Real Genius
Every time I discover there is an '80s classic I've never actually watched from start to finish, I get excited because I get to experience some '80s goodness for the first time. No matter what, depending on the genre, I know I'm going to get a great montage and new inspiration for future playlists to make. Science fiction comedies like Weird Science, WarGames, and Back to the Future I've seen numerous times, so I was surprised to learn that Real Genius somehow escaped my radar for so long.
Tropebusters: Disaster Therapy
Two things are sure to happen in movies that center natural disasters and cataclysmic events. First, there will be absolute destruction. Second, strained familial relationships will be healed, or at the very least, some personal breakthroughs happen. One of my favorite genre tropes involves characters resolving their issues through what I like to call therapeutic disasters.
Bad Mother by Christa Faust energizes the tired mom trope
There is always a need for more stories, especially in the comic medium, with female-identifying protagonists and writers behind them. AWA Studios's Bad Mother will be one of the first of many books to be helmed by a female writer.
