Patience Kenimond excelled in high school, despite struggles that included homelessness and a lack of transportation. Beacon Journal readers donated $12,000 to Kenimond to help with her educational expenses and cover the cost of a car. Kenimond is grateful and says this has given her a leg up as she starts college. Patience Kenimond expected to be dropped off at college with the bike that would be her only mode of transportation. Instead, she drove to the University of Toledo in her new car.

Parole board recommends Tyrone Noling's death sentence be commuted

Updated Aug. 25, 2026, 12:45 p.m. ET Death row inmate Tyrone Noling may be a step closer to his life being spared. The Ohio Parole Board recommended to Gov. Mike DeWine that Noling’s sentence be commuted to life in prison with parole eligibility after Jan. 1, 2029. Five of the eight parole board members recommended this downgrade in Noling’s sentence, while one suggested a total pardon was warranted.
