Birmingham, Ala. — A Georgia couple is asking the City of Birmingham to reimburse them for vehicle damage after they say they hit a sunken manhole while driving near the UAB Medical District. David and Theresa Brubaker, of Canton, Georgia, were in the Birmingham area for a family wedding when the incident happened. The couple said they were driving to their hotel around 10:15 p.m. when they traveled under the Highway 280 overpass on Third Avenue South.

Storm drains like this one are essential for keeping the street from flooding.

New unemployment call system launching in Alabama
The Alabama Department of Labor said it is adding a new phone appointment system to help process unemployment claims quicker. It receives up to 100,000 unemployment-related calls per day.
