Protecting the rights of employees with disabilities
A recent situation at a local business has raised troubling questions about how we treat employees with intellectual disabilities and whether our community is doing enough to uphold their rights. This individual with a known disability, who had served their employer faithfully for four years, was referred to a community program designed to help and support individuals with disabilities. This referral was also added to a statement that he could not return to work until he was enrolled.
National Healthcare Decisions Day 2024: What You Should Know
Advance care planning is a time to stop and think about who would make medical decisions for us if we suddenly became ill, and what kind of treatments we would want based on our own goals and values. Our delay in having these conversations is because it often seems too early, then, suddenly, we find it is too late.
Tips for keeping pets safe from household dangers
Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain Certain everyday household items can pose a threat to pets' health, says Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Here are some items and situations pets owners can watch for. Human over-the-counter and prescription medications are a common cause of poisoning in pets. Nelson said it is important to remember that pets, especially dogs, are not very discriminating about what they eat.
The art of showing up: J.D. Scholten in Iowa's fourth district - Bleeding Heartland
Susan Nelson: If J.D. Scholten goes to Washington, he will carry with him thousands of stories told by rural people struggling to keep their heads above water. -promoted by Laura Belin The conventional wisdom about the congressional race in Iowa’s fourth district is that Republican Randy Feenstra is going to win, not because he’s Randy Feenstra, but because he’s a Republican.
Letters to the Editor
Posted on Oct 6, 2020 Supports Prichard’s stand on education By Bob Durrwachter, Charles City I could tell you a story about Todd Prichard stealing cherries from my tree, but it wouldn’t be true. He asked and I told him to help himself. They were tart pie cherries, so he didn’t eat very many. But I can tell you about how Todd and I agree on the importance of funding public education. Public education is the highest priority of any government.
Letter: The trouble with wild turkeys and the coronavirus
Letters Some people have sincerely expressed concern that these wild turkeys do pose a threat in the just stated situations. I am neither convinced nor unconvinced because there is the element of unpredictability. Right now we are in another unpredictable situation. Of course, I mean "the virus,” i.e., coronavirus. Reader's View: Kudos on the primary, city clerk’s office
Letters Written By: Susan Nelson, Duluth | Aug 27th 2020 - 10am. × It's quite a challenge to conduct a safe election in the middle of a pandemic, but Duluth's City Clerk's office, led by Chelsea Helmer and Carmel Petersson, were up to the task. They had early voting by mail or in person at City Hall. They worked with all 34 precincts to establish a flow of voters that entered one door and exited another, with hand sanitizer stations near each door. There were masks for voters who forgot theirs.

Letter to the Editor: Franken most qualified to take Ernst’s seat in U.S. Senate
Posted on May 25, 2020 By Susan Nelson, Marble Rock Democrats have four candidates to choose from in their Senate primary. The winner will try to defeat Sen. Joni Ernst in November. Admiral Mike Franken is the one to get that done. Here’s why. I care about policy. I gravitate to candidates who are knowledgeable about issues that affect people in their daily lives, candidates with plans. I care about character.

8-year-old was embarrassed after losing his hair, so his classmates lost theirs, too
A group of third-grade boys gathered around as one of their classmates sat in the barber shop chair. That boy in the chair had just been draped in the black styling cape, and he was ready to get his hair shaved off. Meanwhile, his friends “were bent over belly laughing.” A photo captured the moment in an Oklahoma Sports Clips. Those boys were giggling with toothy grins, and most of them were now without a head of hair. Those who still had hair would soon be losing it.

Halloween no treat for pets, says veterinarian
Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the university's Veterinary Health Center, provides some tips to keep your furry friend safe during the fun and spooky holiday. Nelson said one of the most important things to do is to keep all candy—whether for trick-or-treaters or yourself—where pets can't get to it. "Chocolates, sugar-free candies and gums, raisins and some nuts can be toxic to pets," Nelson said.
Veterinary Health Center
Pet Health Center Vaccinations by Susan Nelson, DVM Why does my pet need vaccinations? Puppies and kittens are born with immature immune systems which make them highly susceptible to contracting disease. Thankfully, their mothers transfer to them part of their own immunity via colostrum when they nurse. Colostrum is a substance found in the motherâs milk for the first few days after giving birth. It provides her newborns with important protective proteins against several diseases.
3 common potty troubles for kids
Toileting issues can cause anxiety and embarrassment for a child, and worry and guilt for a parent. If you are encountering issues with your child's use of the toilet, you are not alone. There are steps you can take to address the issue and, most importantly, your child will very likely resolve their issue in time. As a mother of five grown children, I experienced toileting challenges in potty training and bed-wetting, so I can relate directly to the concerns a parent feels.
Our hope is in that which we cannot see
In the wake of the destruction in which the storms of life find us, it is difficult to grasp the scriptures that offer hope. We read about God’s mercy and His grace, but we fail to see it when all seems lost. We forget that one moment, the guards sit on the outside of a cell seemingly in full control. We, like Paul, sit in a cell with no hope in sight save that of our hope in Christ Jesus. One earthquake later and the so-called tables are turned.
Pesky parasites here early: Fleas and ticks already bugging pets around the country
Susan Nelson snelson@vet.k-state.edu A mild winter and early spring in many parts of the country mean ticks and fleas are beginning to emerge, according to a Kansas State University veterinarian. "The season for itching and scratching is here, and your pets will need your help to ensure they stay healthy and free of infestation," said Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the university's Veterinary Health Center's Pet Health Center.

It is carefully reasoned, beautifully written, and sound in its conclusions.”—Howard R. Its significance stems from the fact that it deals with an area of higher education not yet explored by other writings.”—Earl F.
Terror across the World, Peace Conflicting with Islamic State Calamity Intention
Worldwide ISIS (Islamic State) jihad propaganda influences and mind-fucks thousands of will-be attackers who pledge allegiance to carry out mass murders on humankind. Know before you vote: Divided we stand, Together we fall, an Election Series
As 2016 takes hold, Election Day is fast approaching. Reciting the names of presidential campaigners might be easy, but determining the best person for the job is a bit convoluted. Since electing President Obama, perhaps American consensus is that the US has transformed into a seemingly opposite Nation. And, the military is one quarry of the vagaries occurring in the District because of the Bush and Obama stints.
