Causal modeling of energy and resource demand - npj Urban Sustainability

Abstract Many sustainability issues that our society is facing stem from an excessive demand for energy and resources (E&R). Modeling E&R demand is important to understand how people consume E&R and to tailor policies to curb E&R demand. Traditionally, statistical models and machine learning have been used to model E&R demand. While these models can perform well, they are based on associations (i.e., correlations) and cannot tell which variable causes another.

Abstract Soil contamination by metals and metalloids (metal[loid]s) is a global issue with significant risks to human health, ecosystems, and food security. Accurate risk assessment depends on understanding metal(loid) mobility, which dictates bioavailability and environmental impact. Here we show a theory-guided machine learning model that predicts soil metal(loid) fractionation across the globe.

Depopulation and associated challenges for US cities by 2100 - Nature Cities

Abstract For cities, having a declining population usually means socioeconomic and infrastructure challenges to accommodate the remaining population. Using population projections, we found that, by 2100, close to half of the nearly 30,000 cities in the United States will face some sort of population decline, representing 12–23% of the population of these 30,000 cities and 27–44% of the populated area.
